Even if the DVLA does not send you a reminder or it is lost in the post, once it is three years old, that's it, it needs an MOT.
Your registration document will indicate when it was made/first registered and if you need further info, go to dvla.gov.uk.
Don't wait for them as they do not use discretion anymore. If you're late and they find out, you're fined. And I believe they now have the power to do this retrospectively if they so choose, ie you don't tax your car for a couple of months and then do it.
However, without a current MOT, your insurance will be invalid, so get it done pronto.

My car is just coming up for it's first MOT and my local garage have warned me that it is my responsibility to sort it out not wait for the DVLA to remind me!
For most car manufacturers you also need to have a 3 year old inspection for body work or similar when the date passes.
As another Yahoo answerer has stated, you'll find the first date of registration on your log book and it is due the day before the three year's is up.

Take the car to your local MOT testing station, with the logbook, they will go online to VOSA and give you an EXACT date for MOT test.
