My 87 Bronco has been hard starting for a while now.The engine will turn over at a normal rate about 4-6 times then roar to a start and i hear a spinning sometimes.Usually if I cut the truck off then right back on it starts right up or maybe turns over once or twice, but i always get the sound- kinda like trying to crank up a car thats already running. It is also idleing up and down like crazy until warm.
Ive check the basics already, tuned it up, battery, changed all filters, adjusted idle, injectors cleaned. Is it the starter? coolant related? Fuel delivery? Every mechanic ive gone to so far is an idiot- and thats been a few.

To all those who posted answers to my first question, thank you. I know it is hard to diagnose an engine problem because of all the possibilities but I'm hoping that if I explain enough, I may get some where with this and not get hosed at the repair shop.
I have a 99' Jetta and 5 days ago the check engine light went on. My MPG went from 36 to 18 mpg. My car starts just fine with maybe one or two starts that took a couple extra cranks. The day my light first appeared, the light came on, then off, then on again and stayed on. I have a manual and when the car idols it sounds normal and feels normal. When I'm over 2300rpms it sounds normal and runs normal. But, when I drop below 2300 I can occasionally feel a couple of jolts and I can feel the misfires. I went to autozone and they told me the first O2 sensor was reading errors and two of my cylinders were misfiring. Anybody have any ideas??? Please help..

If my car has been sitting for a while, it will start just fine. If I take a short trip (like from home to McDonalds), when I come out to my car it will start, shutter, and then die. If I let it sit for a couple of hours and come back, it will start right up. Sometimes, if if give it a little gas as I'm starting it, it might start. I have has it to the dealership twice for this problem. The first time, they said it was a bad battery. So I replaced that. Nope! It still does it. I took it back. They had it for a week, and they finally called and said that they couldn't get it to act up. I said "Forget it" and I went and got it. I'm sick of screwing with them and being late to school because my car won't start.

It's not the oil, the coolant, or the transmission fluid. Does anyone know what else I should look for and how?

I'm not really sure if a fuel filter is something you routinely replace, or only when you have problems. I have a '93 accord, I've put about 50K miles on it and never changed it, who knows when it was replaced last.

I was also wondering, is there a way to check, and or clean it to figure if it actually needs replacing?

The only reason I even wonder is because I seem to be getting an intermittent fuel delivery problem, it happens so infrequently that its hard to diagnose, but once it stalled, every once in a while it wants to crank about 15 times before starting, and sometimes (maybe once or twice a week, usually the same day), I'd be driving and the engine would suddenly cut out real quick, just enough to give a good jerk.

So I figure the fuel filter might have something to do with it. Either that or the pump every once in a while acts up. I'm pretty sure its not an ignition problem.

The starter on my '96 Ford Taurus died in September of 2006. How long should I expect my brand new starter to last? I drive daily, but not far from home and average maybe 5-10 car ignition starts per day. Last year was the first time I ever had a starter go on a car, so I'm just trying to find out how long they last usually. Thanks for your help.

This happended on a Pontiac Vibe. There is no knocking and neither the engine light nor oil light is on. I had an oil change a month ago (about 1000 miles) today I smelled burning oil and gas. When I opened the hood the oil cap was missing and there was oil all over the engine.
