There are a variety of things that could cause your complaint.
If the fuel pump or anti-drain-back valve is failing, starting could be affected.
Try this… before trying to crank the engine, cycle the key from OFF to On for 3 seconds, then OFF for 5 seconds, to ON for 3, OFF for 5, then ON for 3 and then crank. If it will start quicker, fuel is certainly related to the slow start-up.
If there is no change, you are going to need access to a scanner that will display "live" data-stream information.
But you can check for computer related trouble codes. If the car is 1996 or newer, you will need access to an OBD II code reader or scanner.
You can generally ask the nice folks at the local discount auto parts store if they will retrieve the codes for you.
If the car is 1995 or older, go here ⤵

…and scroll down below the chart for an illustrated discussion of the procedure to retrieve the codes. It is simple and easy, and only requires a paperclip.
With the codes in hand, refer to a QUALITY repair manual for the car, or a shop manual (local library?) for proper diagnostic procedures. AFTER proper diagnosis, repair as necessary, clear the codes and start again.

hi everonehasadream, The catalytic converter (not the "Cadillac" converter), actually could be your challenge. you do not point out the place you reside, yet while it incredibly is California, you're screwed...for the reason which you will never get an inspection decal and not employing a catalytic converter. reason I suggested that? it stands out as the 1st rattling element i might rip out. Screw the warming planet. Your "mechanic" feels like a colour tree mechanic. Get yet another one. pass to the Pontiac dealership, gown provocatively, and teach some leg. while considered one of their mechanics take the bait, say particular to a night out on the city. Then, casually tell him the challenge inclusive of your motor vehicle. If the guy would not grant to repair it loose, then pass back and attempt yet another guy. Ha! Jesus, i'm so humorous when I drink! the challenge could additionally be the carb. initiate your motor vehicle, enable it idle, and then have somebody pull the vacuum tube off the carb. The engine could lavatory. Now, with the vacuum hose off, attempt and rev the engine. If it improves, it is your catalytic converter. If there is not any substitute, then i might say rip that carb out and have it wiped sparkling and rebuilt. Have an amazing day! -Jeeem-

Cranking alot before starting is not a bad thing in cold weather, helps get the oil up where it should be before it goes verooom. Many high compression engines will turn over a bit before starting.
If there is fuel, air, ignition and compression, engine starts when rotated. Any of these could take time to build in your car.

could be that fuel filter is clogged up restricting the needed fuel to crank the car, or spark plugs could be worn, and need to be changed..in other words, when is the last time you did a tune up..could have low compression, even low coolant has an effect on the starting ability...what have you done to car, and tell me how it is running
