The heater core is like a small radiator. The water pump pumps heated water thru the heater hoses into and thru the heater core. The heater core radiates this heat and the heater fan blows air across the fins of the heater core. This is the air that heats the interior cabin of your vehicle.
Your heater core could be clogged due to rust or possibly due to the improper mixing of different kinds of antifreeze.
You may also have a stuck heater vale that is not letting hot water enter the heater core, or...
the mix door may not be functioning properly.
From the sound of your question, I assume that the fan is working??

A car's heater core sits in a fan duct-way, takes the heat from the radiator fluid flowing thru it and transfers the heat from the fluid to the air being pushed by the fan.

If your car heater does not blow warm air, there are quite a few things other than a bad heater core that can cause a loss of heater function.

First make sure the engine is getting warm, the thermostat working, that hot fluid is being sent to the core, and that the air is being vented thru the core.

The core looks like a mini-radiator and acts like one, too. Engine coolant circulates thru it and it can be stopped up by using radiator sealer. Low antifreeze and air pockets in the system can also prevent heat from transferring thru the heater core. They can make a terrible mess on the passenger's floor when they leak, and the replacement is very labor intensive in some models.
