Maintenance & Repairs - October 2006

I bled all the brakes, changed rotors, pads, shoes, no fix. When I first start the car it misses until these lights come and on then the car runs fine. Also, before the lights comeon and you hit the brakes you canhear a steady clicking through the brake pedal until the lights come on. The brakes work fine though.

The remote locking has packed up on my '99 Mondeo i have tried new battery-not that- checked the fuse, tried a few on/offs with the key in the ignition but no luck.

I have the one tire off and the 2 bolts, usually used to release the caliper are off. I can not get the caliper to come off of the rotor to get to the brake pads and replace them. Am I missing something? Do I need to take the whole caliper housing off as well?

This is why I drive my PT Cruiser. It took me 5 minutes to change my pads!

Went to do my brakes on the ol' banger today, needed a 7mm allen key. Trust me to have every size going but ... NO 7MM!!!
Went down to Halfords, no 7mm, B&Q no 7mm, Local garage and guess what not a 7mm key in sight.
Why do fords make cars with 7mm allen bolts when no bugger sells them, is this to tempt me into taking it to a Ford Garage? COS IT WONT WORK !

PS anyone got a 7mm allen key they can lend me? :-)

i got this small block chevy 357ci and i have this small 600 cfm holly single pumper on it and its a stock carb and its just holding back the engine u could say. what could i do to this small carb to make it run worth keeping

About a month ago the red STOP light on my Xsara started flashing on and off, but after a minute stopped flashing. The car was running fine and I was miles from home so just kept driving. In the last month the STOP light comes on whenever it feels like it, but never when I am on motorways or fast roads when I am doing 80mph or more. The car is still driving fine. The only thing I can think maybe a problem is the handbrake. I was told 3 months ago when my car was being MOT'd, that the handbrake needed some attention very soon. Which is one reason why I am reluctant to take my car in. I don't want to fork out money for the handbrake - I just won't park on a hill. The light by the temperature gage also comes on at the same time, but the water level in the radiator is fine. Whilst it seems to drive fine and this light keeps flashing, I just think I will leave it.

I would really appreciate any advice.

We just got a pretty big trailer, and when pulling it up hills on our first trip, things started out fine, but then we lost power. I changed the fuel filter, things were fine for almost 200 miles. Then, going up a hill again yesterday, we lost power. I changed the fuel filter again, paranoid that I had gotten bad gas, and it worked again. I really don't think I got bad gas, as I had run two good tanks of fuel through. Could it be the fuel pump? This has the frame mounted electric pump- is it as easy to change, with the right tool, as my friend says? Thanks!!!

hi,
i recently had a check engine light on and went to dealership to check what the codes are. i have 2 p1457 evap codes. its says that i have a leak near the charcoal canister.i have checked all fuses and they are all fine. i have replaced all the hoses that are in the evap system and installed all evap components : charcoal canister, evap purge control solenoid valve, evap control canister vent shut valve, evap bypass solenoid valve, evap two way valve.
i reseted the ecu to clear the codes and i drove around for a couple of days and the check engine light came on again and found that the same codes came back(p1457 x2). i dont know what to do? any suggestions???

i have a 97 volvo turbo when i drive to work sometimes it just turns off but then it will start right back up and be fine.i went to get a diagnostics check and the guy gave me a pink note that say we recommend a tune up/clean eng and check eng light. i just had a tune up/oil change serv.in aug 06. a diagnostics checks everything dont it / i think he did not do a test on my car. i have no paper work showing that he did a diagnostic check. and on my work order it sayes 1 diagnostic check $65.but thers no print out of a test just what he wrote/ so i still dont know whats wrong... need help fast thanks a lot... also should i have gotton a print out that shows whats good and whats bad..

2000 Escort ZX2 - what's the trick to getting the pins out of the caliper? I can get the caliper off, get the disc off, remove the springs, and compress the piston, I just can't get the pins out. They're pretty crusty. I tried vice grips but can't grab it anywhere. I tried a punch and hammer but they don't budge.

So my car won't start :( I went out at 4 am today and it was cold, but not freezing, very very very windy. The car started, but was acting like it wanted to quit. I backed it up a bit and it seemed to run a little better, then I realized I forgot something. I drove back up, got out, and about 30 seconds later it quit. I tried many times to start it again. It's not the battery. My car leaks anitfreeze, but it is a slow leak. So I checked that, and it was low. Added maybe a third or less of a bottle to get it above the minimum amount line. Of course, it still won't start. The weather is pretty much the same now as it was at 4am. I was hoping it would warm up.
Could it be frozen fuel line? If so, when it warms up it should start, right? Could the low antifreeze have been the problem? Will it fix itself now that the level is right? Or do I have to do something else? I have absolutely no money until the first of the month and I NEED my car to work. Anything I can do to figure it out?

I have 3 gaskets - valve cover gasket, engine manifold gasket and oil pan gasket. I get constant oil spots wherever I stop. How does one know which gasket is leaking? Could it be from something else other than an engine gasket? (92 Cadillac 5.7 liter motor)
