A questionably informed friend is insisting I have to for "balance."

nah you don't have to...if your tires need replacing anyways you might as well do all 4 and just get it done with. "balance" has nothing to do with it...balance is only in question if you have damaged rims where you might be carrying a little extra weight, which in the end would hurt your gas mileage

A whole set is not necessary. Depending on the mileage on the tire you might do just one 10 thousand miles or more I would replace a pair of tires same type and size and place them on front. If the same size and type are not available call or go on line discount tire dot com or the tire rack dot com. Your car is designed to run the recommended tire size. If the car has 45 thousand miles or more on the original tires replace all four. And ask about "Road Force Balancing" and specify dynamic spin balancing

no you don't. when you buy a new tire you can have it balanced for you, but if your other tires are worn you might as well go ahead and get all 4

well, have your tires checked for their remaining tread depth, if any of them are below 3/32nds of an inch then replace em.

It all depends on the condition of the other tires.
