Went to do my brakes on the ol' banger today, needed a 7mm allen key. Trust me to have every size going but ... NO 7MM!!!
Went down to Halfords, no 7mm, B&Q no 7mm, Local garage and guess what not a 7mm key in sight.
Why do fords make cars with 7mm allen bolts when no bugger sells them, is this to tempt me into taking it to a Ford Garage? COS IT WONT WORK !

PS anyone got a 7mm allen key they can lend me? :-)

7mm allen keys are easily available from good quality tool stores, and in fact Halfords do a 7mm allen key with a handle already attached for the express purpose of undoing the slide bolts on brake calipers. You obviously spoke to the work experience spazzer on minimum wage. Go to a bona-fide motor factors such as Partco or similar

The sockets on the links below is one of many variants of the 7mm allen or hex key arrangement. These are ideal for slide bolts on calipers as they allow sufficient leverage to be applied.

Don's Auto Service is also talking out of his ar*se as both of my Mondeos have 7mm allen headed slide bolts on the calipers, and the calipers on Vauxhall Cavaliers are almost identical and have 7mm allen headed slide bolts.

7mm Allen Key

The Ford Focus, Escape, and Contour/Mystique cars use the 7mm allen key to hold the caliper onto the knuckle. Snap-On and Mac tools do sell the 7mm allen head on a 3/8 drive socket. I'm sure there are other makes, as well. Just go to your local auto parts or tool stores and you'll find one.

The easiest way would be to buy a set of splinned and torx bits they normally come with a 7 mm allen key in it. And Ford did make that on the excorts and orions then later on changed them to splined bits the guy who said they didnt is mistaken

First off, Ford never made a brake calaper with an 7mm Allen.
What you are needing is what is called and torkest head.
If you could really look at it you would find that it is more star shapted the a 6 sides allen.
Go get yourself some torkest head bit. You can find them at most auto parts stores

well this is a bit "bush league " but it may work, find a bolt with a 7mm head, clamp it securely in a set of vice grips and use this as an Allen key , it's gotten me out of a tight spot or two , hope it works for you.

yeah you will NEVER undo it with an allen key, you need to make sure its the allen key "SOCKET" then get a small extention bar and ratchet :D happy days..... oh and dont forget to use copper grease on the back of the pads and caliper to prevent ceizing :D good luck

The kind you need is usually a type that fits on your racket. Look in the brake section at the auto parts. I've got one if you want to drive to North GA.
