My husband who is now UA from the Army, walked out on me while I was pregnant. I have no idea where he is. Im going to be getting a job and supporting my baby. Should I fill out as single + 1 or married + 1 ?
We are still legally married even though I dont know where he is.
Will the IRS hold my taxes next year when I file because he is UA from the US armed forces?

trying to get a house and credit report shows i still owe for state taxes since 1991 & 1997. I thought they were suppose to place a lien if they didn't receive it in time. Also my ex husband is on my 1991 state taxes. How was he able to purchase a house and why am i left to pay the amount owed?

I had about $10,000 in freelance/1099 earnings last year, which is enough that I'm getting more serious about deductions so I can avoid paying as much of that tax as possible. I'm a programmer, so I purchased a laptop and plan to deduct that and any hardware I purchased. I feel like it's a stretch, but was also wondering if home expenses (e.g. smoke detectors, new furnace, etc.) are deductible. Is there a way to characterize vacation as a business expense if I incidentally did business/work networking and someone from the trip ended up working with me as a direct result? And what are sort of the standard easy deductions -- charity, donations, etc.? Is there anything else?

I am divorced and have a 20 year old daugther in college. I pay her $103 in child support each week that goes directly to her. In my divorce papers my ex-wife and I are to take turns claiming our daughter on our income tax return. In the last 5 years I have claimed her once. Now my daughter lives on her own and the only support she receives is the child support I send her which is directly taken out of my paycheck by the state and mailed to her.
Today I found out my ex-wife claimed her on her taxes. Does my ex-wife have any right to claim my daughter even if she is not the custodial parent and pays no support or offer any other form of support to our daughter? How can I claim her now without getting into trouble with the IRS?

Hi I'm trying to figure out how much I will have have to pay in taxes depending on what type of job I get.
In other words I need to know a way to figure out how much taxes will take out of my salary (once I get a job), so I can figure out how high my salary will have to be to survive.

For example: at $12.00/per hour I'd be making approx $24,480 per year before taxes. Is there a place on the net I can go to figure out how much taxes will take out of that figure? Please help!

I already checked the IRS website and could not find it there. There may be something there that does this but I could not find it, if you can help I'd really appreciate it. Thanks, Josh

Me and my wife got married this year. I make less than she does by about $10,000. Now i was thinking about filinf head of househould and claiming our daughter so it can work out in our favor. Now how many dependents should me and her have claimed in the year 2006 in our W4? Is it smart to make me the head of household or her? Please let me know, or show me where I can get some info on this. Thanks

For instance, if my income this year was $50K (putting me into the 25% bracket when filing single), and my short term capital gains were $50K, would that bump me up to the 28% tax bracket?

Or perhaps I quit my job and only trade stocks, meaning my "income" would only be the interest I make on my bank account, which would put me into the 10% bracket (easily), would that be my capital gains rate, even if I were to make $500K on my short term capital gains.

Many thanks.

For the past 3 years I have only worked at my home-based busienss and filed using the 1040 +C + SE forms.
This year I started to have a "regular full-time job" adding to my income...So how would integrate this all into filing my taxes since I still made money at home---only making around $4000 from home?

Would I still use the 1040 and stimply attach my W-2 and also fill out the C and SE?
