If I lived in my primary residence less than two years, and received a gain I will have to claim a capital gain. Can I claim a capital loss if I lived in my house (primary residence) if I lived in it less than two years, if I received a loss? Wouldn't the same rules apply?

My ex-fiance claimed the mortgage on his taxes last year. We broke up, and before he left said I could have it for this year. (I refinanced into my name before he moved out.) The interest statement from the old finance co. came to me, but since he is vindictive I'm afraid he will get a copy and claim it on his return. If he does, or did, will the IRS bounce back my return? Or will they demand $$ from me down the road?

I have a general question. One of my friends in a custody battle with his son's mother. currently no one has full custody of the child till a study is conducted. He has filed claiming his son since he was born, yet now that the mother having hard times financially she placed the child on her tax return. The child was actually living with my friend but not until the mother ran into hard times did she wish to have him back. I was wondering since he has in the past filed with his child included and the child did live with him for the majority of the year other than when he went over to the mom's house, does he have a right to file over her?

I only made 4500.00 this year. I noticed that my employer did not take federal taxes out. Although, they should have. What should I do?My W-2 shows that they only took out a total of 500.00 which they applied to social security, medicare, and state tax. I am not sure if this is right. Any suggestions?

I am pretty much a stay at homemom. I have a small part time job where I made about 4,000 dollars. They did not take any taxes out of each of my pay checks. If I didn't turn the W-2 stub in with my taxes, what will happen? Can the government find out?

I made one stock sale in 2006 (for less than $500), and I was taking a loss in doing so. On top of that, my interest earnings were negligible. Do I have to use form 1040 because of the stock sale anyway, or can I just use 1040A?

Please help me to understand how the hell both my husband and I together paid in over $7,000 in taxes and we have to pay in about $684 this year. Granted we have no dependents but I think we deserve to get SOMETHING! I know a lot of people who don't pay hardly anything in, some are on welfare, and they're knocking off over $2,000 per kid. I don't get it. WE choose to have children so we should have to pay for them. That's almost an incentive for people to go out and have a ton of kids. A lot of our "capable-of-working" welfare people are living in brand new houses and are getting tax returns like you wouldn't believe and they never even worked one day the whole year. Please help me understand!

I made about $5800 this year and this was on a 1099 - I also made $1800 that was on a w-2. I am a student, but do you think I will have to pay any taxes? I had heard that if it was under a certain amount I was exempt. Is this true?
