I received my 1098-T letter (mailed to me on 3/20/06) after I filed last year (2005), because the school included my Spring 2006 term on my 1098-T statement. (Apparently, that's how they do it.) As I prepare my taxes this year (2006) can I claim the tuition this year as I didn't claim it last year? I registered in 2005, but the classes started in January 2006...

Do I need to re-file last year's taxes with the updated amount? Or should I put the amount towards this year, and save the forms that say "Begins in 2006"? We are talking about 5K that I'd like to get some cash back for...

1) I bought a new car in 06 for personal use. Four months later (still in 06) I was involved in a wreck (not at fault).
Can I deduct...
A) The sales tax and other miscellaneous taxes on my car when I purchased it? (Conflicting info..one person says yes, another says no because it isn't for business only)
B) Out-of-pocket expenses for rental fees? Or taxes only?
C) Standard depreciation?
D) Extra depreciation due to the wreck?
E) Deductible paid to body shop but not re-imbursement from insurance company not received by the end of 06.

2) Student loans. I was not a student in 2006, but was making payments on my student loans.
Can I claim..
A) Interest paid on student loans?
B) Interest paid but not claimed from previous tax years? How do I claim this if I can?
C) Hope credit or Lifetime Learning Credit?

My teenage son gets survivor benefits from his mom's death. The benefits are attached to his social security number. He worked part time this year, so it will be his first time filing an income tax return. Does he have to claim his survivor benefits on his tax form? (please no answers stating I should call a CPA... I will if I don't get an actual answer here :-)

Irs.gov Where is my refund said my refund was direct deposited on Fri 1/26. It hasn't posted to my checking acct yet. I verified my routing # and acct # with my bank and everything is order. My bank shows no pending direct deposits either. The acct is in my name so that wouldn't be an issue and I have no one that would garnish a refund?? So where could MY refund be??

I moved in October, and so I need my landlord from January-Sept of 2006 to get me the Certificate of Rent Paid form for my tax returns. She does not answer mail and her number is no longer listed. She is a private renter, not with a company. I have googled her name and tried the white pages.

If I can't contact her for this form (which she should KNOW she needs to get to me), can I still do my taxes? This is the last form I'm waiting on and I want to get this done. Can I use a substitute form?

I had someone (not a professional tax preparer) do my taxes while I was in college and I do not believe they ever included my education expenses because I never provided them with my 1098T form. I do not have any of my W-2's for these years or the actual return that was filed. Can I obtain a copy from some where?
