I am applying for a US passport and I am not up to date on my income tax filings. I have NOT applied for an extension. Will I have a problem?

There is nothing on the US Passport application asking about taxes. In fact, the department that does Passports (State Dept) doesn't usually communicate with the Treasury Dept (IRS) about the status of accounts. They generally only communicate about individuals that have "suspect" situations with foreign implications.

It is illegal to NOT file. It is not illegal to NOT pay--just $$$ penalties accrue!

I didn't know tax filing had anything to do with getting a passport . . .
