last year i filed 1040-ez. this year i now have a child to be claimed, i also pay daycare expenses, and am head of my house -hold. i have never owed money.

I used to file the good old fashion 1040. That way you can itemize and deduct those child care expenses. Try to buy a house as soon as you can. Mortgage interest is tax deductable.

For federal, use 1040A or 1040. The tax you owe won't be different because of the choice you make between the two. To itemize you'd have to use 1040, but you don't mention that you are planning to itemize. Child and dependent care expenses are a credit, not an itemized deduction, so you don't have to itemize to take them.

As for state, depends on where you are.

The link below is the rules for which form to use. As Judy said, your choice of forms does not change the amount of taxes. Based on the information you supplied, you can use the 1040A. It is less involved than the full 1040.
