We lived in our house for about 1.5 years and then sold it to move closer to family. During the time we lived there, we spent about $3,000 on home improvments (irrigation system, landscape, new paint, etc...). Even though we sold the house for a small profit, we had expenses that increased the value of the home. I know we have to pay taxes on the profit since we lived there for less than 2 years but how can I deduct the home improvements to help even the playing field? -- Thanks!

I am in a really tight spot and trying to figure out what to do. I got separated from my husband on August 1st, 2006 and that makes me ineligible to file as head of household, even though I was the sole breadwinner in the home for 4 out of the 7 months my husband and I lived together. I have two children, so I have qualifying dependents, but my tax man won't try filing as head of household since was only alone for the last 5 months of the year, not 6, as the law supposedly states. I have tried to get my soon-to-be-ex-husband to file jointly with me so I can claim the child tax credits and stuff but he refuses. If I file married, separately, I will only get about $1500 back, whereas I'd get about $7000 married filing jointly, and at least that, if not more as head of household. I need this money desperately to pay my lawyer for the divorce, and my tax preparer suggested I go to another preparer and just tell them I got separated on June 20th or some such.

Most free federal tax softwares use federal part as bait, when dealing with state tax, they usually charge you. You can not ommit state tax unless you reside in those lucky states (TX, FL...). Does any one know any tax freewares that include state (Georgia in particlular) return. Thanks a million.

Apparently the government are trying to introduce a tracking device to all cars so that we may be taxed for our monthly mileage. The trackers cost around £200 (that you will have to buy) and you will get a monthly bill based on your mileage. Also with your whereabouts being tracked at all times, if you go over the speed limit expect a speeding fine with your monthly bill. To stop this please put the following web page into your address bar and sign the online petition. Thank You

I e-filed using turbotax.com and recieved my deposit in my account on the day that it was promised.
My friend, however, filed using turbotax.com and was supposed to receiver her refund in her bank today...but it did not show up. Has this happened to anyone? What could be the reason? Should she be worried? Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

I filed online with HR Block on Jan 31st. IRS accepted my return on the First of february. Then starting this wednesday the IRS Wheres my Refund site said sheduled for deposit on February 9th. Hr Block uses HSBC Bank in Delaware to transfer my refund into my Chase account. And when I log into the chase account there is no record of deposit and the HSBC bank that HR block uses to transfer the return into my bank shows that the IRS has not deposited the money into there account. Prior year returns I have always recieved when the IRS Site said it would be deposited. Would they delay for a review after they so called processed it and accepted and scheduled it for direct deposit? I did not claim the EIC . But I did claim the phone tax one.

I'm thinking just putting 5% of the 15,500.00, into my 401k which will give me the full matching funds from my employer and then putting the rest of the into a tax-efficient mutual fund. I know that when I start to withdrawal from my 401k, I will owe regular income tax on any withdrawals. I'm just trying to lessen my tax bill when I'm in retirement.

If I was to retire now, my pension alone will put me into the 25% tax bracket...now adding my 401k, I will be in the 35% bracket. Just trying to lessen that tax bite.

My husband works as a contractor and therefore last year when we figured our taxes jointly we owed quite a bit of money. Since we have filed jointly in the past but I chose to file separately for last year and this year, would I be allowed to do so? I'm trying to remedy last year's problem with me not filing but also trying to work on getting a refund if possible and with him working as a contractor that doesn't normally happen if we file jointly, we end up oweing money.
