If EIC is the focus, it's not because they're picking on low income families - THEY'RE THE ONLY ONES ELIGIBLE FOR EIC. And just from some of the questions here, it's pretty obvious that there's a lot of fraudulent claiming going on for EIC.

It's tough that the illegal actions of some people end up causing people who ARE eligible to claim this to have their return delayed. But without further examining the returns, the IRS can't tell which are OK and which aren't - and I'm sure that some of the fraudulent ones will slip though anyway.

And just for information, I am a tax preparer who prepares returns for mostly low-income people - so far, people whose returns I've transmitted have gotten their refunds direct-deposited on schedule, at least the ones I know about.

It is mostly EIC they want to make sure that you can claim your own kids especially if they have a different last name as you. If they have a different last name they want to make sure that is your child. I am a tax preparer and that is why they are auditing most of my customers because of the EIC. It's single mothers who gave there kids the fathers last name and since its different they think you are saying its your child because you want more of a refund with the EIC. They want a copy of the SS Card and Birth Certificate with your name on it. If you can't prove that then you will have fines to pay not mentioning you won't receive your refund wither.
