Yes, those are legitimate medical expense deductions. You can only deduct medical expenses that exceed 7.5% of your Adjusted Gross Income, and then only if you itemize deductions.

The alternative to itemizing your taxes (and probably not getting credit anyway) is a Cafeteria Plan (I.R.S. section 125). You are eligible for participation only if your employer offers this plan. Under a Cafeteria Plan you pay a predesignated amount out of every paycheck to an account. When you have a medical amount that is not covered by insurance (co-payments, prescriptions, etc) you submit a claim for reimbursement from that account. Since money going into the account is not taxed, you are paying for all of this with non-taxed money. If this plan is available to you it has the advantage of saving you money on all your medical expenses -- not just the ones over 7% of your adjusted gross income.

When you're setting up the account be careful not to over estimate your annual expenses because anything you can't claim will be lost.

There's good news and bad news. Yes the copays are eligible to be deducted, if you itemize - not if you take the standard deduction. But you have to subtract 7.5% of your income from your total medical expenses, and you only get to deduct what's over that.

You can deduct only the part of your medical and dental expenses that is more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. If your medical and dental expenses are not more than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income, you cannot claim a deduction.
