My fiance just hit me with a big one. He has $20, 000 in student loans that he never told me about. I don't want to start our marriage in debt so I want to get this paid off as soon as possible. I have no clue what to do, but I know being this far in debt is not good. We own a home, and there is 60k equity in the home should we sell and move into something smaller? Refinance?

I heard some where that after so long you shouldn't pay because it is going to be on your credit anyway and it may be better to just wait 7 years to they come off your credit report. What should I do?

I have been going back and forth with this and have recieved a lot of great help, but at the same time it is confuseing. I have account that are old..3-4 years and not really a lot of money. I'm in a position where i can pay these account off, however i'm not sure that is a good thing. If I do it in writing and pay it in full with part of the deal being that they delete it from my credit, does that improve my credit score? Also, what if they decide against it, does that restart the clock on thr 7 years? I want to improve my credit score fast, as apposed to waiting 3-4 years for things to clear. But I heard that paying or settleing may negatively reflect your score..what can I do?

This is my 5th credit card, i have no balanaces except on one of them and always pay on time. This new Capital 1 card just showed up on one of the bureaus and that score dropped 61 points as a result. Is 5-6 credit cards too much? Why else would it plummet like i had a bankruptcy or something. I was very careful about every step of credit building but this took me by suprise. HELP????

It all started about 3 years ago. I was in the army, and I had a barracks phone. Upon relocating (pcs) to Korea, I paid the bill, then asked for the phone to be disconnected. Somehow, there must have been a delay in the phone company disconnecting the phone. It remained on for about 30 days. In that 30 days, phone calls were made from that phone line by the NEW soldier who moved into my old room. (I don't even know their name). I was OUT OF THE COUNTRY. The bill totaled $55, and I never even knew about it until last year when I got out of the Army. Since then, I have been harrassed consistently by a collection agency for the money. They placed a negative entry on my credit report, but I did not make the phone calls. Disputing the debt with the credit agencies didn't help; they couldn't prove the debts weren't mine. I ended up paying the $55. The collection agency took forever to send confirmation, claiming they didn't know my address.( but they'd been sending me letters for a year)

A friend is telling me that debt will "go away" on your credit report after 7 years of not being paid. I can't see debt just disappearing. Is this true?

I just refinanced my house for a conventional 30yr fixed mortage. I noticed that a majority of my mortage payment is going towards my interest payment vs. principal. But as I will pay down my mortage the principal will increase and interest amount decreases. Is this the way it usually works?

I've tried using them at stores at the mall, i.e. Sears, Kohls, and they have to change them over to their store's gift card and then use the gift card for the purchase. Why is this? The cards are more trouble to use then they're worth!

Ok. I keep getting this call from a collection agency. They have a wrong number, and I've told them that twice! The call isn't for us. They said they won't stop calling unless I give them my name. I'm going to give them my name because they don't need it! How do I get them to stop calling here???

Chase refuses to lower my husband's credit card APR below 29.99%, even with a credit score of 692. He's never been late on a payment. We're hesitant to just transfer to a new card, since his score will take a hit for it. Does anyone know why Chase would be so difficult or have suggestions on how we should approach this? Thanks!

If you have multiple accoutns on your credit which are 3-4 years old, can you call and offer a settlement amount, or do you just ask for a settlement amount. For example, if I have an account that is $244, but is 4 years old..can I cll and offer $150? Anyone familiar with that process? I would rather try to clear my credit myself and not use any companies

I collected a number of debts when I was a student and I was too scared to even access my report - all my cards were cancelled 3 years ago and since then I had no credit. Today, finally..I accessed my credit report (Equifax Canada - I live in Toronto, Ontario) - and I found 2 accounts at collection agencies and then I found 2 more accounts saying 'written off'..

1)
Status: Bad debt, collection account or unable to locate
Payment History:
No payment 90 days late
Prior Paying History: At least 120 days past due ( 2003-11 )
At least 120 days past due ( 2003-10 )
Three or more payments past due ( 2003-09 )

Comments: Written-off
Closed by credit grantor

2)

Status: Bad debt, collection account or unable to locate
Payment History:
No payment 90 days late

What does this mean'Written of'? I still need 2 pay them right? I plan on replaying the 2 accounts at collections..do i contact them now? Any advice?
