Hey I resigned my job from my employer some 4 months back, for better prospects. Now I feel that I did a mistake and want to go back, is it a good idea.

I am an English major and I have recently learned that one of the job opportunities for majors such as me is lawyer. My mother has been constantly pushing me to be a lawyer (she's not crazy about it, though; she thankfully allows me the freedom to choose my career path) and though I agree it is a noble profession, I also understand that at times it is not so noble.

It's not really the public speaking, or the endless hours of investigation and research and memory work that intimidates me. What DOES scare me is that at times lawyers have to defend the wrong people and make it seem as though they are in the right, all for the sake of cash. That is the one thing that I find unattractive about being a lawyer.

So for all the lawyers who frequent Y!A, I'd appreciate it a lot if you could give me AT LEAST 5 very good reasons why a person should become a lawyer despite this "risk", aside from the usual "pay is good" or "it's a noble profession" answers.

Thanks. :)

Just like the above says. Is this legal? A company approaches someone and says "we can't afford to keep you, we have nothing for you to do in the company, you must leave within 6 months, but if you tell anyone in the company you will be fired immediately". Various other positions also open up within the company in which she is qualified for and she is not being offered them. Another strange coincidence is she is also in divorce precedings with her husband whom works in the corporate headquarters. (Husband does not make any executive decisions, but has worked for the company for almost two decades.) Should she get a lawyer and what rights, if any, are being violated? Does a company have right to put a 'gag order' on its employees in this fashion?

I am a 28 yr old woman and have been at my current employer for two years the first year I was the receptionist and the second (and current year) I am a records clerk I was forced to be in this position (long story)
I am just so tired of this dead end job there is one woman besides myself in the records department and she is a 66 yr old woman and has been in that position for 30+ years! I REFUSE to be like her! I am going to enroll to a community college to start (I want to do something that will make alot of money and will be enjoyable) I do love the corporate world and I wouldn't mind working in the health field (on the major high end administrative/clerical side of it) I really need some help, I am really good in the clerical field. If I could put in my two week notice now I would! Does anyone know of any employers who are hiring (with pay at least 16.00hr)? My boss nags me and stresses me out EVERYDAY, its a VERY BORING JOB! I need a change just to be out of all the monotony!!!

I am a recent college graduate (maybe not so recent since it has been 6 months now) with a bachelors in Biological Sciences. I want to get into real estate development/ building and I honestly do not know how to go about it. you are probably asking why get a B.S. in Bio if real estate was what I wanted. The simplest answer is that in my final year in college I realized that medical school was not for me but instead real estate was what i wanted to pursue. So here I am 6 months later with no idea of how to go about getting into real estate development.

So my question is how should I go about pursuing this dream of mine? should I go back to school to study real estate development or try to get a job in a real estate development company and work my way up?

PLEASE HELP I need advise.

Thank you.

I am trying to apply for my first part-time job, and have so far not had any luck. I can't even get an interview anywhere, and now the holiday hiring season is almost over. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Any suggestions?

Also, I read somewhere that you can show interest in a job that you applied for by following up with a phone call. I thought that you're only supposed to follow up after an interview, but maybe I'm wrong. Can someone confirm what I've read? It might help with getting a job.

If the above is true, would it be appropriate to follow up to an online interview if it states that "There are currently no interview dates available for the associated time period. If your qualifications are a match for an available position, you will be contacted for an interview." They make it sound like there is no job opening, but I know there is at least one. I don't want to sound annoying to the company, but I also don't want to miss out on this opportunity.

Please help me out.
