What is your home's value based on? Is it simply the size/neighborhood/structural condition? Or do appraisers look for aesthetic value as well? Basically, I'm wanting to know if doing little things to the outward appearance of our home will help increase the value? (Things like adding nice, potted flowers to the front steps, fresh flowers in the house, etc. I think it's what is called "staging" your home for potential buyers) We're not selling our home- the appraisal is for re-financing our home.

John Steinbeck said the secret to getting rich was to sell something made by someone else.

Kurt Vonnegut said the secret to getting rich was to find the money-river and siphon out as much money as you can.

Were they right? If they were wrong, what's the real secret to getting rich?

Did you know by January 1, 2008 , Cigarette's are going to take a $6.10 a carton tax hike? State and Federal cigarette taxes have been raised 73 times since the year 2000- increasing the average price of cigarettes 80% a pack. Everyone should pay their share of taxes- but it's unfair to single out smokers once again for a 156% tax increase.
TELL CONGRESS THEY'RE GOING TOO FAR
Let congress know targeting smokers with a $6.10 a carton tax hike is going too far!
Please take a few minutes of your time and visit:

And say no to higher cigarette taxes. Thank you.

My husband keeps wasting our money on video games and other useless crap we can't afford, then he tries to hide it from me. He throws away his receipts and won't record them in the checkbook, and he has never paid a bill in his life. If I left it up to him, they would never get paid. I can't trust him with our money. I don't want to treat him like a child and take away all of his credit and debit cards, (besides he would be really really mad) but I have tried talking to him about this for the last 2 years it's been going on, and he just won't stop being irresponsible with our money. Any advice?

I pay $925 per month for a big one bedroom. Should I buy a unit which is just down the street for $190,000. I live in Jersey City, NJ. The unit that I am renting now is a little bit bigger than the one I would be buying, however, the one I'm buying is on the top floor which I like because it's quiet, whereas now I am on the 4th out of 5 floors. If i get a mortgage the monthly payments would be about $1400 including taxes (1400 per year) and maint is 250/month. What should I do?

I go to an antique store and there is a sign on the door that says "Help Wanted." The owner of the store has two of the same shop and doesn't work at the one I applied to. I asked for an application and took it home and returned with it complete a half hour later. Everyone was very sweet there. A few days pass by and I hear nothing so I return to the store and as about the status of my application. They said it is up to the owner to do the hiring but they said they will remind him about it. A few more days pass by and still nothing. I call the store the manager works at and he said he has heard about me and he will look at the application and call me. A few days go by and still nothing. I call again and a sweet old lady picks up and said "Oh I know about you yes it's good you have called b/c we are very busy." It's been a few days since that and I still haven't gotten a call. I really want the job and I am starting to get worried.

Now that Barry Bonds has broke the all-time homerun record, here’s a fun question for you tax geeks. If you are the one who caught the ball, what are the tax consequences? Will he have to pay taxes on the ball because of ownership, or when they ... if they ... sell it?

Means testing for social security is imminent. The age for full benefits can only be raised so high. Being responsible now by funding IRA's will backfire later when I will not be paid as much as someone who didn't save. Not saving is not an option. Can I begin transferring money to my children via gift, with the understanding they will return it later? I realize it would technically be income, however they could pay for my home, car, or my whatever; without actually transferring cash.

The "general partner" (sometimes erroneously referred to as a "general partnership") of a limited partnership can indeed be a publicly traded company, but this is a different question. Also, I know that limited partnerships can be publicly traded. My question, however, is whether a general partnership --which is composed only of partners who manage the partnership and are liable individually -- can be a publicly traded entity. Thank you!
