I've been unemployed since April 2007. I asked some of my friends & some of them said I still file taxes & the rest aren't so sure.

When I filed my taxes this year, I was employed. But next year if I still don't have a job, do I still file?

Me and my girlfriend and her sister want to open up a bar/club in our area. We've taken into consideration many factors; licensing, zoning laws, location, etc. However, we want to be as prepared as possible, so can anyone help us brainstorm what else we should consider? Please be as specific and detailed in your answers as possible, and remember, this is for a bar. If there is anything specific to this type of business we should consider, please let us know. Thank you.

I've read, reading or plan to read the following materials:

1. Investopedia.com material: a bit sparse, not too detailed and informative

2. Jim Cramer's Mad Money: Seems like he's a fad and investing style is more short-term (1-24 months) and not longterm.

3. Lynch's One up on Wall Street: haven't finished but seems pretty outdated. Gives a lot of examples which can lead to tedium.

4. Graham's Intelligent Investor: GAH! It's huge...haven't started

5. Stanley's The Millionaire Next Door: more of a self-help finance book but seemingly very good insight into self-made millionaires.

6. Stanley's The Millionaire Mind: more or less the same as above.

Do you have to report your earnings from playing poker online to the IRS on your taxes?

If so, is there a designated amount that doesn't need to be reported - and everything above that does?

If it matters by state - I am curious about California.

Also, the way the monies are received from the poker site are via check.

I am thinking about getting an apartment and friends are telling me that the rent I pay cannot be claimed as expenses on my income tax. Is this true? I was always under the impression if the landlord claims my rent as income then I'm in the clear to claim it as an expense.

I live in the USA in Florida BTW.

This is like my 4th post, I want to give all the facts this time.
I am near the end of my loan closing. My rate lock ends next Sunday. My loan was with the underwriter but its been transfered to the closing department. My credit score is 786 as of last time I checked. I picked out furniture at a local chain store, and I applied for their Preferred Shopper Card. I have not been billed yet and will not be until after delivery. I have more than enough money in the bank to pay for this purchase when it will be time to be billed, as well as enough for my closing costs/down payment. I don't even know if this will be discovered by the lender, but if it does, do you think an explanation will be enough? Will they even care? I want SERIOUS answers.

So I'm self employed and I get taxed up the ***. I went to a tax guy and he said I should set up a c corp because I would pay lower taxes. However, he said that I would not be able to spend any of my income, and that I'd have to live off of a second source of income, like my wife or getting a second job. I really didn't understand it. Does anyone know what he was talking about?
