I am looking to buy a condo in Brooklyn or Queens within the next couple of years. My boyfriend and I have a combined income of about 150K a year. How much would we need to save for a down payment and closing costs. We are looking to have a mortgage that is around $1500 which is a little less than what we spend now for rent.

I don't even know what we can and cannot afford to look into. Also does being legally married have any impact on buying a home for the first time? I am also a minority, are they any programs that help first time home buyers with any costs?

Any info would be great :)

I just heard on the news (Fox 5) that the housing sale slump is over. Supposedly, Nov and Dec last year was showing increases in sales and that they expect sales to pickup again.

Is this true? What do you think?

I heard somewhere that in the State of CA If a Senior Citizen "downsizes" their home, they can use a portion of the proceeds to purchase a new home, and then are taxed ONLY on capital gains after purchase (not including standard 250K tax free deduction). Does anyone know where I can research this issue?

Thanks!

I'v been interviewed by the the Corporate Planning unit of the university for the job of contract officer. Based on the Q&A during the interview, they said my level is for a lecturer post. Actually, I have a master degree but nowadays, it is not easy to find a job. Therefore, I tried to search a job one step below of my qualification. Based on the question, don't you feel you are overqualified?, how should I respond?

I printed out my forms from turbo tax, and Form 2441(child and dependent care expenses) printed out with my state tax, NOT federal, and it said " Attach to form 1040" But i only have a 1040A. And the other thing is, i'm approve for this because i had a child in 2006, not because of dependent care expenses. So am i suppose to attach it to form 1040A, or send it in with state form?

This is my first year owning a house & I'm not sure on what expenses are deductible. I know about the interest, I'm waiting on the bank to send my statement out. Are things like home improvements/repairs deductable. We donated furniture to charity when we moved (deductable?) insurance premiums, moving expenses, real estate taxes, those types of things is what I'm wondering about. I dont want to miss out on the benefits of being a homeowner.

I left my husband approx. three years ago and 'got lost' to get out of a VERY abusive marriage. I have never filied for legal separation or divorce due to finances but when I got a job last year I put married on my tax form because I thought that was right. Is there ANY way that I could be considered not married due to the circumstances and be eligable for the Earned Income Credit? Or anything else. Is there any qualifying length of time?
ALSO - if anyone may know any web sites that would give a good list of possible eligable tax deductions, that would be awesome!

As always, thanks guys!!! ;-)
