No seriously. You're not really building their self esteem or confidence if it's a lie. You're not doing them any favors. So, why do you do it?

for a better place. They are all so good and powerful people. But we continue to repeat the evils of the past...nothing seems to have changed except excuses and justifications. Everything is getting polluted and people are becoming worse and worse as days go by. What is this? Are we beyond repair? Who will give us a decent life that we like to have so much?

In a story I am writing, most of the events take place in an institution(or academy, or university, whatever) which aims studying alien civilization on other planets in order to deduce from their progress the main reasons that make all civilizations grow and then inevitably decilne. The project hopes to infer from that prolonged study the esoteric truth of the universe and its purpose. The events take place in the not so distant future.

What I want you to suggest is:
1- the name of that institution. My story is supposed to be a satire, so I'm looking for funny names and acronyms that mock the whole business of truth finding, scientific research, deep philosophical significances, and all that kooky stuff:)

2- I also wish you could suggest a name for the manager of this institution/project. I regard him as a thin man whith a shrill vboice, quick movements, and the mean and quick demeanor of a mouse.

Thank you and awaiting your suggestions.

I've been studying Buddhism and it really jives with my view of the world, except for reincarnation. I'm trying to reconcile this idea with my scientific view of the world which doesn't allow for such mystical paranormal hocus pocus.

Okay. As an UN-attractive person, I will tell you...looks matter in EVERYthing, every aspect of life. Don't tell me "it's on the inside that counts" or "everyone is beautiful in their own way". That's bullshit and you know it. There is a natural pecking order and we're all slaves to it. When we're young, who do we have crushes on? Beautiful people. When we're older...what are we looking for? Beautiful mates. Personality keeps you there sure, but looks get you there in the first place. I am so sick of people saying it doesn't matter! Especially that stupid Dove campaign for little girls. I'm sorry, but not every girl CAN feel beautiful, because not every girl IS beautiful. They know, we know it...yet we're sitting there trying to convince them they're not ugly. Because, yeah it hurts like hell! But, don't lie to them! And, they don't call it "inner beauty" for nothing. It's meant to be on the inside. No one should have to use their inner beauty to make up for their outer

I don't want the dictionary explanation, or "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Your opinion would be nice.

I feel that every action I take is out of selfishness, even if I think I am doing it for the right reasons and out of pure love. The truth is, even if I don't expect anything in return, if people never reciprocated any sort of love, I probably wouldn't put forth the effort to love them. So I'm just wondering if anyone thinks something can be completely unselfish...?

A poem;
At first sight,
gathering up the breath of all life knowing to be.

Attendant, dependant, small and revolving around another.

Irregularly brilliant and never seen as the phenomenon
of extraordinary splendor as the assemblage... A.M.H.

Seems when I honestly converse, I frustrate
The motivation behind my birth must’ve been lust straight
From the onset, pain was never a foreign concept
Born screaming: Doc ain’t even hit me with his palm yet
Ironically, my cardinal trait is perpetual calmness
And neurotic girls like me because they figure I’m harmless
But what they don’t see beneath their perception of their man to be
Is a man whose introspection questions his sanity
We are all exposed to humanity and as I’m examining
Mankind's future, most roads lead to calamity
But we’re too blinded by emotions to understand and see
Ruled by our fear, which is demanding we
Use denial to cope, be soothed by the tear
And put a tie on the throat of those bringing truth to our ears

I planned on reading this at an open mic night and just wanted a little feedback in advance. Thanks.

I sit…n I linger…linger for the day I'll rouse…not ever knowing…wanting to breath…wanting to live, feel, see….see what's in front of me. Not noticing what's further on of me….needing…wanting for more then what is absent….I obtain, bestow, distribute & speculate what will it convey? What will ensue…I know but with in the instant I seem to not care? I sense why? What's the motive? I conjecture we'll in no way truly know until it's the end….n all your thoughts n all of your dilemma will just fade away….forgot n mislaid… then what? What then we'll we be? What it may be…is what terrifies me….sometimes I think…do I want to identify it? Or would I rather live this wintry world of pit…This day n point…I do not know…but what I demonstrate is what I am….how I am…how I feel….I am valid….I don't know how to be anything else…but why is it that I don't feel well passable…why do I do the things I do….So various unreciprocated questions….I will remain n I will struggle….until the day comes…were I am gone….with what I necessitate…n what I am….till the day comes….I am…this….why….I disgust to marvel…That's just life….I regret so much….If I could go back I would…Each era I deliberate to myself…Alone…I try to envision how I would be today…if I had changed my imprudent conduct…then I open up my eyes…n see what is left…of this soul of mine….

Not to insult believers or say that agnostics and atheists can't feel good about life.

But this is the general conclusion I've reached after much thought and debate on how people explain their existence. Faith usually boils down to people explaining life in a way that is appealing to them, thus making sense according to the pleasure principle. While atheists and agnostics usually seek to explain life scientifically, seeking explanations that can be proven or tested with solid methods and logic, thus making sense according the reality principle.

Simply put: For believers, feeling good makes sense. For, non-believers, making sense feels good. In my experience, that seems to be the main divide between these two ways of thought.

What do you think?
