What are some techniques in which the author connects with the reader, especially a book where the author uses an informal voice? (He uses the first person. He's informal but not too informal but not too stuffy either.)

Help! my editor is waiting for me to deliver a book and the only thing i have written is a weird story (that actually happened to me) with a guy that happened to be the hero of my old book and i keep seeing him over and over and i am mortified bc he's the stupidest person I know.
i feel a made a real azz of myself and put myself in trouble bc i wrote about him that he's got a penis the size of a baby carrot but his biceps are like huge (coach of some stupid team). and now what ? it looks like the 2nd book is the sequel to the 1st one with the same character; it's kinda like black humor . this is so absurd and instead of writing i sit here and pretend i write the novel but i write answers. help!!!!!!! would you write the sequel and devil may care or would you be afraid to double the stunt and face the consequences of being beaten up by this huge guy? oh -- have i mention that he has a crush on me? he is too ridiculous and at the same time intimidating? idk what to do. help!!!

I have to write an essay on "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by tomorrow, and I am having MAJOR writer's block! My essay is going to be on how Randle McMurphy can be viewed as a morally ambiguous character. A morally ambiguous character is a character whose behavior discourages readers from identifying them as purely evil or purely good.
I see how McMurphy can be morally ambiguous, but I wanted some of your ideas on this; to give me more things to write, and to confirm my thoughts!
But I'm really having trouble figuring out what to write for the second part of the essay which is: Why his moral ambiguity is significant to the work as a whole?.. I dont get it! How does his moral ambiguity contribute to the work as a whole?! PLEASE help me with this!
Also, some starting sentences for this type of essay would help as well... I just can't think!
Thank You in advance! =]

Disoriented, Sarah slid onto the floor and peered under her bed. She paused before reaching into the darkness, which was as threatening as the ocean five miles from her house that remained as hot as boiling water and crashed as white foam onto jagged rocks that waited patiently to punish any swimmers hoping for a relaxing day in the cool and calm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

I think the central character was a male child. One of the main artifices of the story was the ability to travel from place to place by leaping into pools of water. I believe, obviously my memory is a bit hazy, okay a lot hazy, some of the pools of water were colored. The colors would allow you to know where you were traveling, otherwise it was just standard looking water.

The boy did not know about the teleporting pools of water until chapter one or two of the book, meaning the first time we see him travel he is very surprised. Anyone got any clues?

I couldn't. There's too many distractions.

By the way, J.K. Rowling is working on a detective novel.

I'm not fond of detective novels, but I'll reserve my judgement of hers until I read it.

OK so I'm going back and revising the romance novel I was working on that I started for NanoWrimo cause I want to change some things and going back and reading the first chapter, I found I got long-winded (it just came out as I typed I guess) about explaining things. You don't want to bore the reader, definitely not. But how much 'explaining' is acceptable?

For instance, at the start of the chapter, I explain how the heroine and her best friend met (to explain who the people are at the moment I guess) and when I was making notes on it tonight, I marked that entire paragraph out cause I figured it wasn't necessary, all you had to say was they met in middle school and that was that. Right? And I also marked out where I mentioned the would be hero in the next book. And I explained why the heroine has been single so long and how she got her heartbroken, and the hero, how he got burned and hardened against love. It doesn't go on for paragraphs each instance, but is it too much for the

I have four question to ask about characters. In making them up I was wondering how many
characters are really needed in a novel story. I know it depends since I am the writer but
how many are there usually in a story from minor to major? Secondly, as far as minor
characters are concerned I saw the Order of the Pheonix and Snape being a minor character
had some HUGE grudge againist Harry because of Harry's father and how he treated him in
school. and snape was mad that Harry found out about his problem. My question is general
so how can a minor character have some history on a drama matter when the story's focus is
really on the main character and the crap that he's in? How many characters do i really
need to have a novel of fantasy and what references would you offer on learning to become
a fantasy writer. I have LOVED fantasy since I was a child and am an Anime junkie BIG time.

Secondly, How would you guide the characters from an age bracket of teenage to adult
while at the sametime guiding adults? J.K. Rowling did this and she was successful. Harry
started as 11 and stopped as a 21 to 23 year old. (About ready to start on book four
Goblet of Fire.) You can see my problem. I want to give my characters a rising conflict
and SHOW it to my audience. Making them feel like they are in the story going through the
exact samethings that the characters. So How do I hit them emotionally on different
emotions, creating suspense, mystery, love, and action without breaking their minds and
hearts where the story would carry them to the main thing that I am trying to communicate?
We all have many different reasons for writting but the main reason is that we as writers
wish to write is to further explain the human condition and to offer hope and anwsers
through our writings.

Third question is how do you convert a horrorific idea into a fantasy one?

I want to guide my audience to see what it is that I am saying through a rising conflict
where if I were to just say it adruptly it's a jumping conflict and the reader would put
down the book in the trash. I don't want that!! I just want to entertain and educate at
the sametime through the field of fantasy.

Is it wrong to read books as material to comming up with ideas so long as I am comming up
with simuliar and I have a simuliar theme? Through out the story. This is all I have for
research is fictional books. To write a series of books I have all of the Harry Potter
Series 4 to 7, Lord of the Rings 1-3 and the Hobbit and somemore books to review. As you
can see I am a lot and I really need help with this.

I have explained enough. Do you have or know of any references about magic performed in a
story like from Harry Potter series etc.? I have been working on my own story and am almost
done with chapter one. A short story turning into a novel and I need help with characters
and their history. Do I have to go into EXTREME details on the major characters and the
minor characters, the situations that they're in, whether good or bad, even their history
in regards to the situation that I am presenting in the scene or the story, in order to
explain them to the public? I am very new to this field. I just want to help others by
speaking of the things that I have seen through a rising conflict affecting my audience. I
don't know a thing about publishing and I really don't want my work to fall into the wrong
hands etc.

The other question is how do I create a character without it looking like I am refering to
anyone else? How do I create a situation where the scene or story isn't at all predictable
on what's going to happen next?

At the very end of the book, the epilogue it, Harry's son says;
"Our Teddy Lupin! Teddy Lupin! Snogging our Victoire! Our cousin!"

Now, the epilogue says "19 years later", so we can assume that the child of Lupin and Tonks will be at least 19 years old.

So, who is Victoire, and how is Victoire the cousin of Harry's son? And, how old is Victoire?Teddy was "seeing Victoire off", so the oldest Victoire could be is 17 years old.

Is my reasoning right, or did I miss something? Any thoughts?
