If it were to merely glorify the Israelites, why would they have so many illustrations of their shortcomings? Many cleansed historical writings, such as the Aeneid, writes the victors as having doing no wrong. The Old Testament, on the other hand, presents a more balanced picture by showing both the good and bad parts of the Israelites' history.
