I've tried to listen to one before and I dunno, I just don't get into it. Because you hear one static voice for every character that speaks. I find I get lost in it, who just said that? Especially when the person doesn't try to change their voice, or when they do change their voice and it's so...laughable. I prefer to read it myself I think, it doesn't put me to sleep that way.

Does it depend on the type of book it is? Romance audio books I bet would be a real drag...but then I'm a visual person anyway, not really an audio person.

What about you?

Can you learn from fiction? What do you learn? Is some fiction more intellectually stimulating than others? Can you give examples?

Which do you prefer? For me, I can type very fast however I go too fast and I end up writing worse. It takes a lot longer to write with pen and paper, and there's a lot of scribbling where I make small corrections...but I think its better in the long run. What do you think?

Ive been working on mine every now and then for some time now and it seems to me, although one never knows till finished, to be about half done.

I am at the moment just getting everything onto paper and will have some very intensive editting to do later on.

But for now I am wondering if there are any hidden rules to writing such a peice, and secrets I should know about to make it better, any ideas or tips from people who have written things like this before.

I really hope people will want to read it when Im done, its certainly a feel good story and it takes the reader on an amazing journey through the life of someone who we probably all know and wave to every day, but never get to know deeply. There is deception, deep dark family secrets and families in turmoil, there is all kinds of situations including romance, horror and bit of science, drugs, abuse and never ending emotional pain.

Anything I should know so I can be sure I am doing everything I can to make it work?

I'm trying to write a novel and am having trouble getting names. I googled baby names and got some baby name sites that list every name on earth by type origin and etymology, all of which takes years to sort through. I want names that aren't too common yet not so out there that it makes you think that the author is trying to hard. The names are for middle aged people living in Britain with Northern European origins.

Any tips for picking names?

I have a writer's market from 1997 (lol OLD haha) and I think it has a section in it that lists literary agents. Is the guide to literary agents more thorough for the genre you are looking for or what?

I asked this earlier and didn't get an answer for this question, so I'll try again.

Is it great literature? If yes, in what sense? I'm not asking if the story is interesting or not. I'm wondering whether there is anything innovative or great in its style, in character portrayal, in narrative development, in perspective etc. Or is it just entertainment? If possible, I would be interested in such persons' opinion who have read a lot (of good literature) and are familiar with the basic ideas of what makes good literature. But any opinion is welcome. I haven't read the books so I cannot really form an opinion. Thanks

I have a constant list going of books I want to read and I can get kind of obsessive about finding books. It's like I feel like I should read every book review site out there just because I might miss something. I'm also addicted to librarything.com and the forums there, for the same reason.

How do you pick what you read? Do you just go to the library/bookstore and pick something out? Do you read book reviews? Check the bestseller lists?

Hello, I am teaching a first-year comp. class with literature, and I am using the theme of traveling as a way of self-discovery. The novels that I have chosen are A ROOM WITH A VIEW and THE ROAD (I got rid of TRAVELS WITH CHARLEY since students tended to not like it as much as I did). Anyway, I am trying to think of some short stories to round up, and the only one that is popping into my head right now is "Young Goodman Brown". Oh, and "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky". Please suggest as many as you can so that I will have a varied lot to choose from. If the class were longer than a semester, I would have added good ol' "Huck" to the mix.

Oh, and the short stories should have some literary merit, i.e., classics.

Thanks.

I read somewhere that it was good to go out and buy a bulletin board and to tack information and pictures on to it so that when you are writing, you are totally in the zone. So I have a small bulletin board cause I don't have room for anything bigger and a white board for this. Should I cut the outfits I put them in in the chapter and find representations of their homes and stuff even if I don't describe them? Or should I just stick to things that I will describe? What would you do?
