I have to write an essay on "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" by tomorrow, and I am having MAJOR writer's block! My essay is going to be on how Randle McMurphy can be viewed as a morally ambiguous character. A morally ambiguous character is a character whose behavior discourages readers from identifying them as purely evil or purely good.
I see how McMurphy can be morally ambiguous, but I wanted some of your ideas on this; to give me more things to write, and to confirm my thoughts!
But I'm really having trouble figuring out what to write for the second part of the essay which is: Why his moral ambiguity is significant to the work as a whole?.. I dont get it! How does his moral ambiguity contribute to the work as a whole?! PLEASE help me with this!
Also, some starting sentences for this type of essay would help as well... I just can't think!
Thank You in advance! =]

The character McMurphy is what makes the story. Without being "morally ambiguous" what kind of story would you have? None. Readers have to be able to relate to his motives in order to understand the story line, however readers also have to be able to dislike him and disagree with his actions in order to fully understand the consequences McMurphy suffers in the story.

He had sex with a minor thats why he was sent to jail in the first place. He thought he would get esay time in nut house. 15 going on 30 i think he said i think. So there is one reason not to like the man,but the film or book dont play on his crime and we forget by the unfolding comedy and mayhem he creates in the nut house. So morals went out the window early in the book.

RP McMurphy should be in prison instead of a mental institution. He is rebellious like a criminal. Why he is in a nut house there is no clear answer? He should have been put in prison.

the character cares approximately his fellow "inmates". He stands up against Nurse Cratchet, and the powers that be to purpose to get them better scientific care, honest scientific care. there is the place you start to sense compassion for the character, understanding that he's not an entire loser, yet that he does have a heart. sturdy success. :)
