What is your opinion when it comes to ethics? Do you think universal absolutes exist in morallity(Kant) or is reason the one true virtue?

When I went to work today (9/11/2006), I saw the flag at half staff. I asked at the front desk, "Who died?" They said it's at half staff because of 9/11. I said, "But those people died five years ago."

Has the American flag ever been at half staff before due to an anniversary? How about the anniversaries of (a) Pearl Harbor; (b) President Kennedy's assassination; (c) President Lincoln's assassination; (d) Martin Luther King's assassination; (e) the sinking of the battleship Maine in Havana; (f) Christ's crucifixion; (g) the sinking of the Titanic; or (h) any other anniversary?

If all these answers are no, then what's different this time?

Tablets etc have been found containing the year of someone's reign eg twelfth year, the date eg 5th and the month of that year. We have then changed this somehow into a date relating to the modern calendar. How was this possible?

I just finished a book called "Buffalo Soldier" by Bojalian and it was one of the greatest books I have read all year. I picked up "Midwives" because I wanted to read something different by the same author, but the person who recommended "Buffalo Soldier" said that they had a nauseating response to "Midwives". Does anyone like the book? Should I bother reading it?

I've heard that photocopying DOES harm really old photos. But what about scanning? I've used those Kodak kiosks (like in the drugstores) to copy some old photos. Is THAT bad?
