They were protesting against practices of the Catholic church. Some people believed it was departing from the original foundation of the Christian faith selling things like indulgences where people can buy forgiveness for sins and the concept that visiting holy relics can provide forgiveness for sin, praying to Mary instead of to Jesus, etc.
The Bible says we are saved by faith, not by works but when church gets too legalistic it can basically turn faith into a work. The Reformation was all about getting back to the basics - the teachings of Jesus.

The Catholic Church. Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of one of the Catholic churches at the time and those were just complaints he had about the church that he wanted to change; he never intended for this to be a full-out revolution.

However, the Catholic Church took it personally and it just went on from there until Luther was excommunicated.

Do a google search on the Protestant Reformation and you will get TONS of websites on the subject. There's also a good movie called "Luther" which is out on DVD and video

Roman Catholicism.

Read Martin Luther's 95 Theses. It's way too lengthy to post here.
Also, read about The Edict of Worms and Luther's reply there.
All of those sources reveal what the whole Protestant Reformation was about.
