For all who answer this question that are not my friends and don't know about my life: This is not a personal question, so don't assume that, please!

here's a list of the FIVE books i would keep and why:
5. to kill a mockingbird by harper lee---because i love the adventures of dill, jem, and scout as they try to lure boo radley out of his house. when i firdt read it in 1965 there were parts to the book that absolutely frightened me.
4. i know this much is true by wally lamb---because it tells a complex story about twin brothers; one of which has to care for his mentally ill brother.
3. angela's ashes by frank mc court---because i actually felt his pain and misery as he described it in his memoir.
2. the secret life of bees by sue monk kid---because it's a simple story intertwined w/amny complex and sensitive topics.
1.. my name is asher lev by chaim potok---because this book follows the struggles of a jewish boy who wants to become an artist, totally against the demands of his orthodox father and mother.
Excellent, thought provoking question. thank you.

I have original additions of a Revolt in the Desert, (Lawrence of Arabia) a Mark Twain book, and other books given to me by friends and family that I wouldn't want to part with. The rest I could live without, but I'd pick the best ones from my favorite authors.
Books which were received as gifts from special people are important because they represent the person who gave them. My old books are really cool, and sort of historical because of their age.

Huh.

Can I leave most of cloth, shoes, make-up instead?

Lets see?

Jonathan Livingston: The Seagull by Richard Bach
(because it changed my view on life and important matters and tought me that nothing is impossible)

The Neverending Story by Michael Ende
(because it is the deepest book I have ever red and my personal favorite)

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
(because that is a book I have to have and I needed lot of time to get it)

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin
(because I adore this one)

The Wheel of time series by Robert Jordan
(well at least book one - Eye of the World - because it is a gift from someone important)

This was very cruel question.
And I would buy rest again, just to let you know.

I will keep all the books with me even if i will get less space because I just love them. While reading I forget about everything that is going around me. While reading I can see the story happening in front of me and if I stop reading, I think that it is the interval between the film! So my answer is simple- THEY are my Life!!!

I agree with all of you who said you cannot part with the books. I love books so much, it would be agony. I love the way they look. I love their smell. I love the memories of the ones I have read. I love thinking about the plots of the ones I haven't read. I have one bookshelf (of many) next to my bed. Sometimes I just lay there staring at them thinking about the magic in them. I would rather sleep on the floor than get rid of my books. I also have a though time lending them out. Many times I don't get them back, or they get too beat up. Basically, I have trust issues.

I have quite a few OLD books that came with my house (which I bought from my grandmother) so these books have some meaning to me. One is a book that breaks down Shakespeare, whom I LOVE. I reference that book soo often that it has cracked along the binding. And I have a bird reference book that my grandmother and I used to use when we would sit in the window seat and watch the birds...she had written notes in it as to which birds she had seen and little stories about some of them..that is priceless to me.

All of my Orwell, Beckett, Proust, Poetry, Chicano Lit, American Lit, I'd be inclined to keep most of my theory books (because I'm a writer).

I'd have to keep the ones that have a little something in that I wrote, one my son has something published in, the ones my father-in-law wrote, the ones my friends wrote and my cookbooks.

Ohhhh... no way! I can't possibly get rid of my books. They're so valuable to me and I have to have them right there with me all the time. My books are extremely important to me and there is NO way that I'd get rid of them.
From very simple novels to my precious HP books and my favorite Jane Austen novels, to Alexandre Dumas and Paulo Coelho and etc. none of them are an option, I'll keep all!

I would keep my Lord of the Rings books, Catcher in the Rye, and any other special ones.
If I couldn't take my books with me, I would give them to a close friend or family member. Maybe they would keep them for me until I could take them back again.

All of them...even if I had to move into a one room apartment I would find a way to fit the books in. Asking me to decide which ones to keep is akin to asking which of my children or dogs would I choose. Books have always been counted among my friends and I could not give up one of them.
