I don't know if it's innate or learned, but why are our prides the rock that must not be shaken? Are we so shallow that we must be our own foundation, faultless, and anything that distorts that fallacy must be pushed aside before it can take root?
Let's look at romantic sincerity, for instance. Rationally speaking, rejection does not have to equate a defficiency on your part, but that's how it's perceived, even if we consciously know better than to perceive it as such.
Why the great fear? How do we conquer it? Maybe humble ourselves a little and by doing so, counterintuitively, grow stronger?
