Since I'm a Unitarian, I get railed against by both the "All religions are insane" people here, and the "Every word of the Bible is literally true, in English as God wrote it" crowd. So I have a question for the people yelling at me from both sides.

How well do you understand each other's positions?

Atheists, do you know anything about religions other than the one you were raised in, and what you pick up on from pop culture? Ever read any Zen Buddhism texts, pick up a Carlos Castaneda book, talk to a Quaker at a war protest? Or do you just develop an inflexible position and hold it against all comers?

Fundamentalist Christians, same question. Ever read any Zen Buddhism texts, pick up a Carlos Castaneda book, talk to a Quaker at a war protest? Or do you just develop an inflexible position and hold it against all comers?

It seems every moderate Muslim, liberal Christian or non-strident agnostic I've met has a good general knowledge of other beliefs. What about you noisy lot?

I am in my 40s. My much younger sister is very carrying, tender, and supportive when we are face to face. When we are apart (we live in different states) she can be very mean, degrading, and doesn't want to maintain contact. Almost like two different people. Can this be a dual personality disorder?

My almost 7-year old daughter wants a tiny mouse for her birthday. I had hamsters when I was young and the only thing that I remember is that they stunk a lot. Any advice on the best pet for someone this age? I like the idea of something larger than a mouse - easier to find if it escapes from its cage!

Ever since WWII we have been warned by our politicians against an adversary that was an existential threat to our country. Until recently, it was the Soviet Union. Today that threat is Middle Eastern "terrorist" regimes.

Our politicians are empowered by the notions of fear and patriotism they instill in the populace by continuing the struggle against the enemy. It is no different in the Middle East. People are encouraged to hate the adversary, and lend support to the leaders who continue the fight.

Without an adversary, a government's power is greatly diminished. Just look at the former Soviet Union as evidence.

The current conflict benefits the leaders of each side, since the fight distracts the people from the social ills that plague their own respective homelands. They both retain power so long as they can keep the ignorant masses patriotic and/or devout.

What would the world be like if we stopped allowing our leaders to create adversaries with which to control us?

All i ever hear is china this and china that. The fact that they have the largest population in the world and a bit of cash doesn't mean their heading anywhere fast.
China is still a communist and many of the citizens are living in poverty so in my view, china is a third world country just doing better than most.
China isn't as wealthy or technologically advanced as the USA, Japan, Britain or Germany? so who cares whether their economy is booming? It's not as if it affects the world in any way? do people get what i'm saying?
