I just read a question whether prostitutes are everywhere. One of the answers mentioned Saudi Arabia and it made me think of the Sultana-books.

Princess: A True Story of Life Behind the Veil in Saudi Arabia
Princess Sultana's Daughters
Desert Royal

all (co-)authored by Jean P. Sasson. Since these books display SA in a less than flattering way, I am interested in your opinion. Am I correct in assuming that they are as controversial (read: hated) as "Not without my daughter" among Iranians?

I of course do realise that the large majority of these "oriental tales" books about the horrors and delights of muslim/arab culture are utter rubbish. It is just that the Sultana books stick out of the masses since they are (allegedly?) from somebody who is first a native and second still living the same life they describe.

My daughter had applied for a job in Saudi Arabia. She's a nurse here in our country Philippines. She's assigned to King Fajad Hospital. Is the working condition there okay? We're worried since many of our countrymen who worked there had been abused, especially the domestic helpers.

I'm a Saudi female, I've been abroad nearly all my life (I'll be returnin g to Jeddah next month), I'm 23 now and I hold a high school diploma and a diploma in IT, however, because I've been away from my country for a long time, my Arabic is poor. I am proficient in English though and I love to write. I'd like to take up a part time job while I continue my studies in a private college in Jeddah. I feel I would do well in advertising or writing articles for the English media in KSA. What are my options and how can I go about getting a job considering my circumstances?

The snip:
RIYADH - A leading authority of Saudi Arabia's hardline school of Islam has condemned camel beauty contests as evil, saying those involved should seek repentance in God.

Camel pageants have become major events in the desert kingdom in recent years as tribes hold ever larger competitions, with bigger prizes and wider publicity.

...

"Everyone must repent of these acts from which no good can come because of its evils, and they should beg forgiveness from God," said a fatwa, or religious ruling, issued this week by Sheikh Abdul-Rahman al-Barrak and a lesser-known sheikh.

I don't know whether it's true or not. If it is true , i want to know how they determine when one is a muslim or a non muslim. Whether the Saudis restrict the visits by non muslims or is it a total ban. Is there anyway for a non-muslim to visit Mecca ( as a genuine tourist ) ?
