I am married. When I filled out my W4 for 2006, I selected the box that reads "Married, but wihtholding at the Single higher rate" to be on the safe side. All my paychecks report that I am being taxed Federal-1 and State-1 but come to find out, my taxable status is 'married.' My employer confirmed that this was THEIR error. I now owe $2000 to the government, including penalties for choosing the wrong tax status. Should I pay the $2k or is my employer liable? Should I ask my company to pay?
