When I talk about "Among all the animals, what are my favorite one?", I would naturally say, "I like cats" using a plural common noun without 'a' or 'the'. I understand that.

I am thinking, however, whether we can think of any specific situations or contexts under which we'd prefer to say, "I like a cat" or "I like the cat", still meaning "cats in general".

In daily conversations, "I like cats." is used most frequently, and "I like the cat" sounds like I am talking about a specific one or applying an abstruct idea on 'CAT', ie. making the sentence sound more literal.

(1) I like cats.
(2) I like a cat.
(3) I like the cat.

About the sentences #2 and #3, can you think of any proper situations where we can naturally say 'a cat' or 'the cat', meaning 'cats in general?? I hope you people understand what I want to know here.

Thanks in advance.

CLINTON HELPED CHINA join the WTO after China was caught giving nuclear techology to Pakistan. China joining the WTO has cause joblosses and bankruptcies across the U.S.. Families have lost their homes and cars. The world was reluctant to let China into the WTO because it was less than 10 after China killed thousands of its own people with tanks and guns.

Anyone care to explain why?

I'm looking into a 1 bedroom apt., for 2 people, no washing machine, no dishwasher, just reg. TV/PC/appliances, regular people - work all day, home at night. Can anyone give me a head's up as to how much I might be looking to spend a month on electric? I'm from Miami and here I spend about $200 a mo. but that's with central AC. I'm just trying to come up with some type of a little estimate/budget. I'm mostly concerned about winter's ave. because I know summer will go up with AC units. And if anyone has any advice as to where I can search [online] for apts. cheap, that'd be nice.

Mine is the one where Tim Meadows is trying to do a census report and knocks on Christopher Walken's door. If you haven't seen it it's on the best of Christopher Walken. Also, the angry boss sketch with peirce brosnon and will ferell. Hilarious! I love SNL!

I have a bad habit of doing things for people or feeling guilty for not trying to help. Unfortunatly this means that I haven't had a day to myself in 2 years. It's driving me mad because everytime I have a day off people ask me to run errands for them or look after their kids. I even had a friend asking me to cancel my plans yesterday so I could help him out and now I feel guilty for not doing it. So how can I be more assertive and say no?

I have been putting in alot of volunteer work in at festivals, museums, and fundraising. I am wondering if this is the same as "community service" hours that many black sororities are looking for? Or are volunteer work and community service seperate things?
