Betta are fine with other fish in a community tank, just not other male Betta. I have a 12 gallon with a Betta and two oto catfish. Guppies might not be a good idea because they can look like Betta. Maybe a small school of tetras would be good.

You also need to make sure the fish you get live in the same temperatures and aren't fin biters. I thought about getting some dwarf puffers but decided against it since they could tear the betta's fins.

peaceful bottom dwellers work best i've found. anything mid-top swimming or schooling tends to piss the betta off and get his way hehe. quicker swimming fish would also outcompete the betta to his food. bettas take their time to eat.

in a 10 gallon you could consider otocinclus (mature algaefied tanks only), pygmy corydoras, panda corys (mature tanks only). these guys like to be in groups. albino/bronze corys are more common, but get pretty chunky and would prefer a larger tank to snuffle about in. don't get a plec, they're too messy for a 10 gallon really.

people have also had success with apple snails and african dwarf frogs, be aware both are messy when it comes to poopy, and dwarf frogs tend to live on a diet of bloodworms, and make a mess when they eat them too!

in a 10 gallon you could also consider a female betta sorority tank. a sorority tank is very well planted with lots of hiding places, and there should be no less than 5 girls. they're still pretty fiesty and a larger group means they can work out a pecking order.

Actually, bettas are pretty peaceful towards other fish, males are intolerant of others of their own kind, that's why they are in small containers at the store.

You can pretty much mix them with anything except fish with long flowing fins. Guppies for example.. Some times the betta will confuse those fish for rivals and attack them.

I have a Betta, 2 guppies and 2 ghost shrimp in a nice filtered 5g tank with lots of plants a bell shaped rock decoration. The Betta chases the guppies only when they come over to him and doesn't seem to go for the kill. He basically ignores the ghost shrimp. However every betta is different, my roomates eats the ghost shrimp, still leaves the guppies be though.

Bettas don't get along with other fish, they live alone in the wild, female bettas can be put together but theres no saying they won't fight. Wikipedia says catfish, mollies and loaches but i wouldn't try it.

My betta picked on my other fish (killed a couple) so I separated him

I have 1 male Betta in my community tank who gets along well with ALL the other fish. I have neon tetras, penguin tetras, mollies and cory pandas. Hell my male betta even shares wafer foods with the pandas and mollies. Just dont put othe rmale Bettas in with them.

Male bettas cant stay together as they are a "fighter" fishes and would end up killing each other. You can have about four-six female bettas in your tank, but they still my fight between each other for the territory, plus they are not as colourful as the male ones. So i would say if your tank is that big get gold fish, i like they idea of having 6-7 black ones and one gold, should look pretty.
