To all such 'Wuthering Heights' must appear a rude and strange production. The wild moors of the North England can for them have no interest: the language, the manners, the very dwellings...must be to such readers in a great measure unitelligible, and- where intelligible- republisive; (Charlotte Bronte 1850) How far do Charlotte Bronte's words go in explaining the hostile reception 'Wuthering Heights' recieved on its publication in 1848? Examine why the book failed to ignite the interest of readers in 1848.
Please help.
Thank you.

I have three cats and one recently passed away. One of the cats behaves as though nothing has changed. The other has started to become "friskier." This made me wonder if the two cats are even aware that there is no third cat anymore. Are pets (specifically cats) able to tell when another is no longer there?

I see many people on answers claiming that religion is 'mind control,' as if religion was created by One Evil Sod back in the dark ages. And while I myself am a hard atheist, I wanted to pose this question in the hope of receiving some interesting answers.

Religion has been around since early man praised or feared the elements - gods of fire, thunder, and the wind are commonplace in early mythology. It's a product of *misunderstanding*. When people were unable to understand how weather systems worked, there were gods of weather. When people were unable to comprehend that the stars were space-bound furnaces, the stars were called gods. As elements and forces are marshaled and used by humans, these gods become outmoded and quaint.

Given that the average person has almost zero practical knowledge of physics, is it any wonder that today's gods are gods of origin and creation, who make all the hard questions about the birth of the universe easier to deal with?

I worked in florida jan-april , and then Jul-Aug in NYC.

My W2 form(NY-state filing copy) shows'state wages and Tips'(column-16) as the total fedreal wages ( earned in NY+earned in FL), aginst what I think should be - the amount earned in NY.

This may amount to more NY state tax, Can anyone explain me, is this a mistake in W2 or correct entry? If it is correct what can be the reason for this?

PS: My ADP statement says NewYork requires total Fedral wages to be reported in Box 16

Considering that "On November 21, 1920 Croke Park was the scene of a massacre by the Auxiliary Division. British police auxiliaries entered the ground, shooting indiscriminately into the crowd killing 13 during a Dublin-Tipperary football match. The dead included 12 spectators and one player, Michael Hogan. The latter, Tipperary's captain, gave his name posthumously to the Hogan stand built four years later in 1924."- Wikipedia
I have my own opinions in whether the game should be played there at all, but what about that anthem? Does anyine think there may be trouble before, during and after the game?

I have lived next door to a couple who moved in about eight months ago, and they row all the time. My husband and I have heard it getting physical recently, for example, the door has been thumped against as if he is hurting her against it, and other odd noises have occurred as well. We live in a block of flats so everyone in the block hears them. The thing is, as is the case in much of modern society, we only know our neighbours to nod to, and I feel if I ring the police they would think I was interfering. My husband loathes any contact with the authorities and his attitude is to stay out of it. He has tried to help people in distress in the past out on the street and he was the one getting cautions, hence his depising of the police. But a woman mey be suffering domestic violence and I feel I should do something. Any suggestions?
