We have a ficus in our front yard in Arizona. The frost killed the leaves over the cold weekend. This tree is really ugly (has grown at an odd angle and is overgrown dispite recent trimming) and we'd like to get rid of it but our HOA forbids getting rid of live trees. Since the frost may have killed it off, we think now would be a good time to stealthly finish it off without neighbors being suspicious but we don't want any of the other flora or fauna around it to be affected. How do you kill a tree without hurting the other vegetation?

The brain has many self-protective qualities, including denial, creative problem solving, dissociation, natural relaxation, cognitive restructuring, etc.

What marks the quality of a supernatural experience that convinces someone that it involves something external rather than the brain engaging in normal, self-protective activities?

If you were brought up to expect supernatural experiences, are you more likely to interpret your experience as supernatural?

I have a 2001 Saturn that just started to have an interesting problem. It is really cold out (-10 celsius or more) as of yesterday, and when I was on my way home from work, I went to clean the salt from my windshield, and the wipers went up and started to work, but were only inching up a bit at a time. They stopped halfway up and would not move further. I thought something may be frozen, so brought it into my heated garage overnight. This morning, they moved fine in the garage and for few minutes after, then after 10min on the highway, they started acting up again. The fluid is not frozen, squirts fine and is -45 rated. The motor sounds like it is trying to move the wipers and I see minor pressure on them, they just dont go smooth. Any ideas?

I'm taking it in to my dealer tomorrow to have them check it, but wanted to see if anyone else heard of this behavior or had to have their GM car fixed for same issue. I'll let everyone know the solution when I hear from the garage.

I am in the middle of buying an old mosque, and I'm intending to do it up a bit. I've got it at a knock down price, as the previous occupants left it in a hell of a mess.

I'm half thinking of turning it into a modern nightspot/nightclub - do you think a good name for an ex-mosque that is now a nightclub, would be 'The Mosque'?

Do you think this is a good idea, if so, could you suggest any suitable names for my new nightclub?

Any help would be appreciated.

I want to claim Bankruptcy but I was told the judge will make me payback all my debt with my income tax return, but I was planning on using the money to hire my lawyer to do the proceedings. Can someone let me know if this true and what is the process for filing bankrupt?

The Technique
Active listening is really an extension of the Golden Rule. To know how to listen to someone else, think about how you would want to be listened to.

While the ideas are largely intuitive, it might take some practice to develop (or re-develop) the skills. Here’s what good listeners know – and you should, too:

Face the speaker. Sit up straight or lean forward slightly to show your attentiveness through body language.

Maintain eye contact, to the degree that you all remain comfortable.

Minimize external distractions. Turn off the TV. Put down your book or magazine, and ask the speaker and other listeners to do the same.

Respond appropriately to show that you understand. Murmur (“uh-huh” and “um-hmm”) and nod. Raise your eyebrows. Say words such as “Really,” “Interesting,” as well as more direct prompts: “What did you do then?” and “What did she say?”

Focus solely on what the speaker is saying. Try not to think about what you are going to say next. The conversation will follow a logical flow after the speaker makes her point.

Minimize internal distractions. If your own thoughts keep horning in, simply let them go and continuously re-focus your attention on the speaker, much as you would during meditation.

Keep an open mind. Wait until the speaker is finished before deciding that you disagree. Try not to make assumptions about what the speaker is thinking.

Avoid letting the speaker know how you handled a similar situation. Unless she specifically asks for advice, assume she just needs to talk it out.

Even if the speaker is launching a complaint against you, wait until she finishes to defend yourself. The speaker will feel as though her point had been made. She won’t feel the need to repeat it, and you’ll know the whole argument before you respond. Research shows that, on average, we can hear four times faster than we can talk, so we have the ability to sort ideas as they come in…and be ready for more.

Engage yourself. Ask questions for clarification, but, once again, wait until the speaker has finished. That way, you won’t interrupt her train of thought. After you ask questions, paraphrase her point to make sure you didn’t misunderstand. Start with: “So you’re saying…”

My sister used to be extremely chubby, but she excercised and lost over 60 pounds. She normally keeps it off and manages to stay around 130-135. She looks great, but she confided in me that she used Dulcolax for about a year and half after each meal. She said that its effect has worn off. She said she hasn't been able to use the bathroom in days and she's afraid to see a doctor. She's 17. What should she do? I advised prune juice, but she said she tried it and that even thats not really doing anything for her.
