My sister used to be extremely chubby, but she excercised and lost over 60 pounds. She normally keeps it off and manages to stay around 130-135. She looks great, but she confided in me that she used Dulcolax for about a year and half after each meal. She said that its effect has worn off. She said she hasn't been able to use the bathroom in days and she's afraid to see a doctor. She's 17. What should she do? I advised prune juice, but she said she tried it and that even thats not really doing anything for her.

There is no reason to be afraid to see a doctor. She is doing the right things now in regards to her body it sounds like with the exercise and she needs to stop using the Dulcolax if she hasnt stopped already. Seriously, give it a day or two and then if she doesnt . . go then make her go to the doctor. Things could get worse if you dont do something about it.

Such a practice often leads to dependence on the laxative action to produce a bowel movement. In severe cases, overuse of some laxatives has caused damage to the nerves, muscles, and tissues of the intestines and bowel. She should see a doctor right away and be honest with the doctor about what she has been doing, so they can help her. The doctor will probably want to run some test to make sure she hasn't already caused any internal damage.

Laxatives are to be used to provide short-term relief only, unless otherwise directed by your doctor. A proper diet containing roughage (whole grain breads and cereals, bran, fruit, and green, leafy vegetables), with 6 to 8 full glasses (8 ounces each) of liquids each day, and daily exercise are most important in maintaining healthy bowel function. Also, for individuals who have problems with constipation, foods such as pastries, puddings, sugar, candy, cake, and cheese may make the constipation worse.

1) Try to persuade her to see a doctor. If she has something seriously wrong, she could be seriously damaging herself, and there will come a time when even the doctor will not be able to help her.

2) If she refuses, then you talk to her doctor. Since he also has a responsibility of confidentiality, you are not abusing her confidentiality with you. He may be able to give you good advice.

3) Keep an eye on her and if she seems to weaken, if her skin or eyes change color at all, if she seems unusually sleepy - abandon confidentiality and tell your parents immediately and get an ambulance.

Would she rather see a physician or a mortician at the funeral home. Ask to see her Last Will and Testament. Her survivors will need it.
Ask her which outfit she would like to wear in the casket and request that she go ahead and write her obituary for the newspaper.
If what's going in is not coming out, it will eventually be fatal. Then her weight won't matter.
If she's afraid to see a doctor, is she afraid to die?

Go to the doctor she could have a blockage. By using a laxative constantly you can cause bleeding and damage the lining of you intestines severly. This is not good. Damn stupid Hollywood magazine and their wafer thin models. Not only that she has not been getting the proper amount of vitamins and minerals and could have severly damaged her kidneys.

She needs to either use a laxative or a suppository but sounds like she has abused laxatives and now has a lazy colon. She will probably have to try retraining her bowels. For now laxative or suppository and if this doesn't do the trick then an enema is next.

Lots and lots of fluids. She shouldn't be doing this to herself at such a young age. I think you should inform mom and dad about it. This is serious. What if something bad happens and your parents find out you knew about it. Could you live w/the guilt? You need to just tell sis that mom and dad need to know about this and just tell them. It's for her own good.
