Several people in my life tend to get deeply depressed about their life and always come to me to talk about it. I am a good listener, but I am also a very optimistic person and I don't dwell for long on negative things in my own life. I am finding it very hard to give them good advice on how to overcome their sadness. It is something that comes easy for me, but they never seem to understand when I tell them that being a happy person isn't something that happens to you, YOU have to CHOOSE to be happy and do it yourself. Aparrently this advice only works for some people, and not for all.
Anyway, I am starting to feel a little weighed down by all the people I know who are always depressed and wonderring what else I can possibly do for them. So far my advice seems to go in one ear and out the other.
Last week with my boyfriend, he was telling me about something that was making him depressed. I am getting tired of always feeling like peoples counselor...I don't know what to do

My situation is that my husbands 15 year old daughter has moved in with us. Probably a temporary basis as she is having some major issues with her mother. I don't necessarily agree with her just moving out, as she needs to work things out with her mom. My husband works out of state and that leaves me to discipline her. It's a tough position for me to be in. She expects to be able to do what my children do but we have to take into consideration the past several weeks of her own actions. She is trying to push my buttons, asking to do things she knows she isn't supposed to do, staying up late, talking on phone non-stop etc.. I don't want to tick her off but I have to discipline to some extent.....very frustrating. She has been with us for a week now, going to see her Mom and Sisters for the first time tonight. Mom has not talked to me at all about the situation which is strange!
Does anyone out there that has been in a similar situation have any advice?

Later this month my gf and I were due to celebrate our 5 year anniversary. We have been living together for 3yrs. However last week she confessed to me that she had strong feelings for another guy and that things were not working with us. From what I can gather the main reason she believes we are not working is that we spend little time together due to my lifestyle. I am a shift worker and have one year left of study at uni. She finished uni at the end of last year and is working full time. The guy she has developed feelings for is a co-worker who also has a long-term partner. They have identical working hours. They began to hang out several months ago and I encouraged her to have work friends. The lifestyle that I'm currently leading is not permanent. With any luck by the end of next year I will have commenced my own career with normal hours enabling me to spend more time with her. She has temporarily moved out to assess who she wants to be with. What should/can I do?

Seeing who chaired the group (James Baker) and his long history with GHW Bush and Reagan, and hearing how GWB has been taken care of in his previous failures, is this another bail-out?

Does this provide a convenient option for the President to get out of Iraq cleanly?

Do you think he'll adopt any of the group's recommendations?

There seem to tax benefits in 2010 for putting money into a traditional IRA that I can later roll into a roth IRA. So, can I take the 401K that I have with a former employer and roll it into both a 401K with my new employer, and deduct 4,000 of that to put into a traditional IRA? Thanks so much for your help!!
