How come some american words mean something different in the UK.

For example: In America, if they say I like your fanny, they actually mean your bum. If somebody said that to me over here, they would get a punch as we call fanny a woman's private parts. What do they use the word Bum for?? A down and out person I think????

Also, why call crisps Chips. Over here Chips are served as a part as a main meal.

Why call chocolate Candy. What do they mean then when speaking about Chocolate.

Anybody else come up with different meanings for words.... Would be interesting to compare.

Everyone who works at a meaningful job is providing a service to society. But it has always seemed to me that certain people provide a service without which our society would crumble and collapse. My friends and I frequently discuss this as a way of educating ourselves and also discovering the basis for what keeps modern America functioning.

Rather than picking just one, which is pretty much impossible, limit yourself to the three that matter most to keeping America (still) the place where most of the world's citizens would love to be!

I am natually a quiet person. I do talk but not much. Most of my friends say that it's ok to be quiet , but they just do not know what it going on in my head. My boyfriend finds this annoying because at times he would ask me things that I do not feel compelled to answer because I am too shy and other times i just want to hear him speak and not say anything. It's getting really annoying because I really want to say something but nothing comes to mind. Also whenever anyone is speaking, I tune out not realizing this and i offend the person. Im trying my best to tell them that i will try to talk more but some friends get annoyed and ignore me completly and my boyfriend seems really distant.

i have read so many comments about the negative influence of rap and hip hop music on our society, what suprises me is that many of these people who post these comments make themselves look like intellectuals who have a sound understanding of society. intellectuals collect primary research and evidence and dont post narrow minded comments with a hope to receive answers from likeminded people. if you really want to find out, why not ask those questions directly to those people your most concerned with. once you've done so then you can post your answer. if your too scared to do so, then your FEAR of the other may be the answer as to why you find the rap culture so intimidating. truthful answers can only come from those people you hate and fear so much, and maybe you will understand how your ignorance and fear was the root cause of the problem. scoulding or marginalising people does not better you or them.

I am a Hindu and am anxiously waiting for Christmas. Wouldn't it be nice if everyone celebrated the Christmas spirit regardless of who we are, what we do?

Same goes with Eid of Muslims, Diwali and Holi of Hindus and other festivals....

What do you think?

I was at my b/f's dad's house and when we got to the car Christmas got brought up. I said that I thought he was flying to Houston to see his mom and he said "Shut Up". I was told by someone a long time ago that it is better to say "Be Quiet" or "Hush" not "Shut up" because it sounded disrespectful. When I told him that was why I was acting the way I was, he said that I shouldn't have opened my mouth. What do you think? Is it ok to say that to someone especially in front of people?

I have an 11 year old daughter who has developed a new habit of disrespecting me. She talks back to me, doesn't do chores, ignores me when I'm calling her, and makes comments such as "Are you always such a nag?" on a daily basis. I have never spanked my daughter and do not find that an option. I have been a single mother throughout her life and have tried to provide her with all that she needs. I am going through a difficult time trying to gain control back in the household. Do you have any advice on how I can remedy the disrespectful attitude?

Hi, I have an 80GB Seagate hard disk that I have bought at most two years ago and I bought a hard disk enclosure as well. Just about two months ago, it started acting up - it wasn't being recognised by my comp. I have a new laptop now and it still doesn't work like it's supposed to. My comp recognizes it as a USB Mass Storage Device but the hard drive doesn't appear. When I try to access Device Manager my comp freezes and when I unplug the device from the usb port, my comp goes back to normal.

I have searched the web for numerous forums that may give me an idea as to how I can solve this problem. This motivated me to buy a new hard drive enclosure. However, doing this did not solve my problem.

Now, when I plug the hard disk enclosure, my comp reads the enclosure but when it starts to install the hard disk, I get a blue screen with a "physical memory dump error". I don't know what to do know. I have important data in my hard drive that's why I want to recover it.

Help please?

My question is specifically about driving directions. I work for a performing arts organization. Every week or two, I have to prepare directions to get 4-6 people from their homes (in 5 neighboring states) to a performance venue. My boss doesn't like the directions available on any of the big-name trip-routing sites; she'd like more maps and wishes they were larger, more detailed and easier to read in the car. While I could simply use a printed atlas for her (and supplement it with city maps for the destination), this doesn't solve the problem of getting quality directions to everyone else. (I usually email the directions to everyone.)
Could anyone suggest either reasonably priced software or a web site that present results differently from the model used by all the big-name travel sites? (The line-by-line directions are okay, I guess, but the little, tiny maps are hard to work with -- difficult to read as they are and not easy to copy and re-size.)
Thanks for your help!

I have inherited a 20 month old spotted saddle horse. He is beautiful. He was living with a different family member that did nothing with the horse but provide the small area for it to live. I have been educating myself alot about horses and have broke some of the bad behaviors, and gotten to the point of being able to place the blanket and saddle on his back. When I did this for the first time he just stood their and had no reaction, and has acceped the saddle since without problems. Does this mean that the horse will be able to break easily? Also when Rebel is tied for his daily grooming he will take his foot and paw at the ground. He does this several times during his 30 min grooming. He doesn't appear to be mad, ears are forward. He just had his hoofs trimmed by the ferrour. What does this mean when he does this? Is it that he just wants loose?
