Everyone who works at a meaningful job is providing a service to society. But it has always seemed to me that certain people provide a service without which our society would crumble and collapse. My friends and I frequently discuss this as a way of educating ourselves and also discovering the basis for what keeps modern America functioning.

Rather than picking just one, which is pretty much impossible, limit yourself to the three that matter most to keeping America (still) the place where most of the world's citizens would love to be!

doctors use of wide variety of medical equipment to do there job. This medical equipment is designed by engineers. Ex- MRI, ultrasound, etc..
The soldiers of today fight with more technology then ever before. They have a plane that will fly itself now, heat seeking missiles, etc... All by the way were designed by engineers.

Kids in high schools can now take college class via TVs. You can earn a degree on line at your own pace and own time. All this stuff was designed by engineers.

I would go with
parent
teacher
police
These are people that impact others in a day to day, real world way. For the third item I might substitute fire fighter or pastor, but again these are people that have the potential to shape someones life either directly or by example.
