Me and a friend are planning a trip to L.A. and want to stay at a nice hotel that is fairly cheap (around $100 per night or so) that is also in a nice, safe area. Are there any suburbs/areas around L.A. to avoid? Any nice, inexpensive areas? Any suggestions? Thanks for the help!

We aren't sure where we are staying yet, I was thinking the financial district. We want to do Muir Woods, visit the bridge, Chinatown, Alcatraz and Fisherman's warf. Can we do this cheaply on cable cars or buses or are we better off renting a car? Anything else you think we really need to see while there?
