It is such a captivating city, and it is true it never sleeps. You can go out at anytime and there are always people up and about, especially sanitary works, they work damn hard to try and keep that city in tip top shape. I found it to be relatively clean (for the population) and I found it to be safe. The one thing I found you had to get used to was the smell. From car exhaust, to street vendors the aromas of the city are unique.

What is not to like about New York, the people are friendly the sites are stunning the food is great flowers all over the place shopping fantastic. The only time I have not had the greatest time there is when I have gone to early in the year and it was COLD but it is like visiting anywhere if you get bad weather it puts a dampner on your visit, go in May, September and you can walk from one end of Manhattan to the other, take the ferry and then walk back accross the broklyn beach, give the city another chance.

Was a lovely place when we visited AND we had dinner at the top of the (sadly no more) twin towers .
A boat trip around Manhattan Island is a must.

I'm a NZer. I have been there and loved it. There's just SO much to see and do, it's amazing. So much on offer. It would take you forever to get through everything. The museums are breathtaking and you could spend whole days in them. Restaurants to die for. So much kitsch history too. Spotting scenes from movies and TV shows (you just have to stay out all night and have a croissant outside Tiffany's at 6 in the morning! hehe) I think it would take a tough nut to make it in the city at first if you were to settle there, but for a city vacation, wow, can't go past it.

I should not be answering this as even though I was over in USA I never touched New York, but I met a guy from Manhattan who was similar in character to Mancunians and that was not too bad. But my sister in law went to NY and said she could not get any decent food, which I found unbelievable.

Im a new zealander living in england and I went to new york. the place had a great atmosphere but i was shocked by how incredibly and often aggressively rude the customer service people were. ie shopkeepers and subway conductors etc. I even got yelled at for ordering some food 'wrong'! the average person on the street was really nice though. I enjoyed all the things to see and do but probably would prefer to visit and couldnt live there.

I went with my wife and two sons - we're Brits. We stayed four days and did all the usual stuff but what do my kids rave about most? The breakfasts!
