Yes it is, but as in any metropolitan area you need to use good judgment to stay safe...Cambridge is a great city...lots to do, ethnically diverse, great restaurants, good shopping particularly in the Central Square area, good transportation by bus and subway and just minutes to downtown Boston....

Central is just fine, it's decent. It's pretty similar in a way to where I live which is Dorchester Lower Mills, about a 30 minute ride away on the red line train to Ashmont. Central just has more stores and people around but other than that, it's okay. I'd live there if I could. As a matter of fact, I was going to move out of MA because it's just so cold and expensive anyway, even though I should be used to it because I've lived here forever, but I'm still not satisfied. Other than that though, no matter where you are, you should always just watch yourself, but whenever I'm at Central, I'm not worried. You shouldn't have a problem if you're just cautious but other than that you can relax. It's not as bad as living in REAL boston at all. :-P lol

Central Square is a good area. . .However, it has some downfalls. It's always very crowded (loud), and tends to have teenagers walking around hanging out near shops, and homeless people as well. Not that anyone may bother you, but it does happen. Just use the same common sense you would need in any urban area. Crime is very little. Very close to the subway, and shopping, and grocery marts/restaurants. But you would be just as safe there as anywhere else in the city, and you'll be in a good location.

It's relatively safe from crime - certainly no violent crime there but there might be break-ins or vandalism, etc.. at night especially. There are a lot of bars and clubs around there and therefore drunk people (especially college kids) at night. But also a lot of good shopping, and restaurants, and there are supermarkets and stuff around there as well, and it's right on the Red Line that goes right downtown. So it's certainly not a "bad" area but I would walk with someone if it's real late at night just to be super safe.

I agree with Mike R with additional mention that there are usually a few homeless who congregate there. And one cannot say there is absolutely never any violent crime. On the other hand, that the two supermarkets, Whole Foods and Harvest, are both into upscale and organic, and the next nearest food market is a Trader Joe's, should say something about most of the people that live in the area.

cambridge is a great city, and like any other place has its "good and bad parts." there are absolutely some quiet areas of cambridge with gorgeous houses (expensive though) and then some very noisy, traffic prone parts.

if you can afford to live in the nicer parts of cambridge i recommend it highly. i practically grew up there with my grandparents and loved it.
