For a week in mid-August, I'm planning to commute from Mountain View to Santa Cruz. I hear the 17 can be nasty-busy, though.

Are there known times where I can expect gridlock?

Is there a good site I should use to monitor or predict traffic?

I'm taking my first NYC trip this July and there are many sites and things I want to explore. I plan on the possiblity of going to a broadway show, Yankees game, out to dinner, shopping, sight seeing and etc. But, I also don't want to spend all of my money to do what I want.
