I was wondering wether my old backpack or a messenger bag would be more functional, and which would be better for my back and shoulders. School is starting soon, so I will probably have to carry several books at a time.
backpacks usually have less room (I think?).
a backpack distributes more weight evenly, however I only carry my backpack with one strap because otherwise, my hair gets caught in between the straps.
On a messenger, that wouldn't happen, but messengers also have a reputation of being uncomftorable and unstable. There is a type of messenger bag with a waist strap that secures it from swinging around, but i havent been able to find any of these yet .
Which would work better?

sidenote: style doesn't really matter, I only need the bag to function well.

I have $600 credit at Continental Airlines. I need to buy a ticket before early Sept. I'd like to go to a place that is warm but not humid, friendly but NOT TOURISTY. I live in Manhattan so I'd love to choose a place that's the opposite of all the craziness here. Quiet, lots of open space, beaches are definitely an option as long as the sand is smooth; SUN!!!, friendly people (if any at all ), inexpensive...it could even be a buddhist temple in the quiet mountains of CA. I'd LOVE your suggestions! THANKS!!! :-)

This is going to sound very stupid to some (or most) but I'm an aspiring writer considering jobs in NYC. I've been looking up apartments located in NYC but I'm very confused on how the city is divided up. Yes, I've looked at a map but what would be considered the areas to avoid? And what is a broker's fee on apartments up there?

Considering I've spent my life in small towns across the U.S., I find the idea of living in a big city a little intimidating and I want to make sure I live in a decent part of town.

Thanks!

I have 4 children, ages 17, 14, 13, and 10. We will be traveling spring, '08. Is this a good time to go to Italy? Should we book a trip with a travel agency, like a guided tour, or is there a better way to book things separately, like a "do it at your own pace?" I do not want to be overbooked like the guided tours tend to be, with having so many kids, but I do want to see at least Rome, Florence, Venice, and Capri, or some ocean. I am worried that we could not do it on our own, without the help of a guided tour. But the tours tend to be so fast paced, and boring. I want this to be an amazing trip, that we will never forget. And fun yet educational for the kids. Thank you for your answers to anyone who has done a trip like this!

Did anyone see the news, 4 kids was shot in the head in Newark, New Jersey. What happen? What went wrong ? Do they know who did it? What is this world coming to. You have to be a sick person to put one in a kids head. God bless the family.

I'm sure someone else has probably asked this as well, but I have noticed it too. Why when we see another foreigner in Japan do we ignore each other?

Granted, I live on a military base so my situation is different than say an english teacher or company worker who comes over here, but when I am no where near a base and see another foreigner, its like we both go out of the way to avoid each other. I can admit I do it too. But I usually don't think about it until afterwards.

I have been in this situation numerous times, and I feel guilty afterwards, like I should have made an effort to say hello, and wonder if they thought the same thing. What is your opinion on this?
