Plannig to take our two kids (10 and 6) to Barcelona next August but have read that many of the city's attractions, shops, restaurants are closed in August. Has anyone experienced this or can give guidance? Would not be great if the zoo, marina etc were closed as we would have less to do with the kids.

I will be going to Koh Samet from January 9-16, 2007. Should I book a hotel in advance on the internet or just show up and look for a good place. I want to stay in or very near Hat Saikaew but many of the internet rates seem inflated.
I am willing to pay around $40 US per night for a room. I would prefer a place with a pool but it is not necessary. There will be three adults travelling. We are looking for a room/bungalow that sleeps three. Are my expectations realistic? What do you suggest?

I have been told that in the winter, people from Winnipeg plug their cars into sockets at night, as well as when popping into the local shop for a pint of milk. Is this true?

Considering a move away from the East Coast to a warmer climate. Want to find a city where I can walk to shops/restaurants, people are friendly, streets are clean, there is natural beauty, museums, film, ballet, lectures.
Easy airport access is important. Natural food, yoga/meditation. Strong small business community.
