I will be going to Koh Samet from January 9-16, 2007. Should I book a hotel in advance on the internet or just show up and look for a good place. I want to stay in or very near Hat Saikaew but many of the internet rates seem inflated.
I am willing to pay around $40 US per night for a room. I would prefer a place with a pool but it is not necessary. There will be three adults travelling. We are looking for a room/bungalow that sleeps three. Are my expectations realistic? What do you suggest?

You will definitely want to make reservations. December - February is the tourist season everywhere in Thailand. Koh Samet is a very small island, Hat Saikaew is just the landing port, it's best to stay on the East side of the island. A song-taew will take you to your resort for about $0.50 per person. It's worth it to be out of the village and in the resort area.

Peak season in Thailand is December and January, especially 15 December to 15 January.
Hotels tend to be fully booked during this time, so better-off pre-booking. Of course there is always a chance of finding a room in some hotel somewhere.

If it is winter in Europe, figure on Thailand being booked. It is kind of like Pasadena during the Rose Parade. It is always possible there is an opening without advance booking, but you are risking it during high season and few places with give low season rates in January.
You can always book one week and then go shopping around for another place once you are there.

I recommend you the Sai Kaew Beach Resort Hotel situated in Koh Samet. The hotel is basically recommended for Beaches and sun, nightlife entertainment.

there are several places, but they tend to fill up early. So either take the first ferry and look around (it is not too big.) Since it will be tourist season, you actually might want to book ahead.
