I currently am training in Aikido and I absolutely love it. I can't believe I didn't do it earlier. But I would like to become more well-rounded, and since Aikido isn't so much offensive, I was wondering what would be a good martial art to take along side Aikido that is more offensive as well as defensive? What Martial Art compliments Aikido?

I am leaning towards...
Ju Jitsu
Judo
Muay Thai

if anyone has any other suggestions, or advice about the three above, I'd appreciate it!

Im in the striking arts right now. In the future in planning to take up judo. Do you think will i be able to hold my own on the ground with judo, or do I really have to take up bjj or wrestling to take care of my self when the fight goes to the ground?

Why do martial artists say Taekwodo is out to get money, when technically, those people are paying for lessons too. Accept it. If you are paying for lessons, then the instructor likes your money way more than he likes you. Honestly, do you think these people work there @$$es of so you can be a good martial artist. Do you think they risk not having a stable job, to teach you? Please give me your honest answers "Martial artists"

Does punching wood or a wall make your knuckles stronger? I heard from one person it does but from another that it doesn't. Does it or does it not? If not what does?

Kinda silly question I know, but I'm a beginner and I've just got my yellow tags (some people call them stripes or other names...) but I'm not really sure where I should put them. My teacher said about 3 inches from the end of my belt, but did he mean 3 inches then another 3 and the other one on the same end of the belt?
I know I'm kinda simple, I just don't wanna get it wrong!

Oh yeah.. and no TKD bashing thank-you very much =)
Thanks,
Rana

I swear I don't go around picking fights. The reason I'm asking is because older blue collar guys in bars, guys who look like they've had a tough life, hard jobs, and maybe 2 or 3 divorces, always want to beat me up in bars. It's mostly because I look very young for my age and I have a pretty face, and apparently that infuriates these guys.

I'm 25, 6', thin and I work out 3 times a week. I've been able to hold my own in fights against guys my own size. I'm also interested in this to supplement my exercise program.

Thanks!

I have been doing Aikido now for 2 months. Now I'm not really heavy but I am heavier than I should be and also am heavier than I look. I am doing something about it though, and have lost a stone.
In Aikido this week we did the move where u stand back to back and one person lifts the other onto their back. Now I couldn't do this, I had done it a couple of months ago and one guy yanked me so hard, I really hurt my arms now I can't relax when someone tries.

But I am really paranoid also because I think people can't hold my weight on their back. I want a truthful answer, is the reason people can't hold me over their back because I am too heavy or because I am not relaxing? It's was a bit humiliating really and it's put me off Aikido slightly and I don't want to be put off it cause I love it so much. But even my sensei couldnt do it (he does have a bad back at the mo as well and is really small, but I'm not making excuses) honest answer please, why is it that they couldnt do it?

I had a jujitsu tourny on Saturday...the rounds were 5 minutes, which I'm not used to. The matches were also really close together, and I'm really sore! I'm having some serious chest pain with deep breaths...did I somehow strain a muscle I don't know about in there or is something else going on? Any experience with this? Thanks in advance.

Every time I bring up video people, on this site, get all in a bunch. Books are better than video I get. My question is what makes a book soooo much better than a video. For me I tend to learn better when I can see the action along with the word. Explain how books far excede the video in martial arts. To add I am talking about skill of technique and the like not history or kata, but even with kata I think a video would be so much better than books. Yes I know instruction with a real person is best. I know I'll get several about going to a real instructor. Just keeping topic on video vs. book.

Quite a few people who were picked on or bullied seem to turn to learning self defence. Is this an effective way to face your demons?

I'm really intrigued by documentaries and shows that educate you on the science of fighting. Human weapon is where two fighters travel the world learning about the various Martial Arts. Fight Science was a show that taught how knockouts work, etc.

Are there any other shows that will teach you how a knockout works? Or submissions? Or how to defend yourself? Anything related to fighting that involves showing you proven (and sometimes even, scientific) methods to show you how something works?

Thanks for any replies, I really appreciate it!

could anybody tell me what some good martial arts are that practice: joint manipulation, throws, holds/locks, quick knock outs(ie, vulcan nerve grip, yes I know its just from StarTrek). Preferably something where i could block a punch, and then transition into a joint manipulation or throw. any ideas, also, weapons training, mainly knife-like or bo/stick would be good to. I'm not looking for something that focuses on tradition, kata, and self control, I had enough of tradition and kata in karate, and as for self controll, well, I've got a pretty good handle on that. I'm interested in something practical. thanks everyone.

is it good to fight back?..i take karate and my instructor tells me when a bulies bothers you and once they know you can fight they will stop bothering you.he also tells me that never let any push you around.im 15 yrs old.and i have came cross to bullies that wanted my phone but i ran and they gave up chasing me.how do bullies judge people?do they go after people that they think are weak?if you fight back to them will they stop bothering you?i know that bullies like to scare people.so if they sit there trying to get you frightened and you actually do get scared they will continue to do it...but if they try to scare you and you sit there not scared at all will they stop bothering you and wont it also make them look stupid?
dont bullies also travel in groups? so what if you outnumber them will they get scared?this bullie at my school i want to get rid of him.i want to get my friends ant straighten him out.i just want someone to beat him up so badd.

what would be the best thing to do?

It took me about ten years to earn my black belt in Judo and eight years in Hakko ryu jiu jitsu. How do some people claim to be able to teach Krav Maga, BJJ, Muy Thai, karate, kung fu, Judo, Kenpo, Tae Kwon Do, boxing, and wrestling in their styles?
