What is a derailleur? Is all-aluminum OK or should the fork be something else? I see a lot of Shimano shifting mechanisms, even on low-end bikes. Are these good, or is there something else? What's a good material for a saddle? I have also seen gel covers.

I am looking at a few bikes--any riders out there? What's the best brand? What kind of equipment is the best? I plan to ride on the paths mostly, except for a couple unpaved walking paths in my area, but still pretty beaten down, as trails go. No heavy-duty trail riding...yet. I want something good that's going to last. I know Schwinn bikes the best but I know there are better brands now. My options, which are mostly comfort mountain-type in the same price range, are:

TREK
-Hybrid 7100 bike path
-Hardtail 3700 or 3900 mountain aluminum
-7.2 FX Fitness

Specialized
-Crossroads Sport comfort

Schwinn
-Voyageur Hybrid
-Sierra comfort Sport

GIANT
-Sedona Road
-Boulder SE-W or W

Opinions from riders?

I've narrowed down my search for a new frame to these two bikes. Besides all the hype in MBAction about the Nomad, which one of these frames would you pick and why?

I am on an extremely limited budget. (Single income family). I use to ride MTB in AZ for about 5 years. Had an old Trek. Anyway, I want to get a road bike for multiple reasons. GAS prices, we only have one car and I want to leave it with my wife, I need to get back into shape. My work is only 7.5 miles from my house, which I don't think it would take too long to accomplish that. (I use to ride 30+ mile trips on MTB trails). Anyway, I have been browsing bikes and noticed the price difference from MTB to road bikes. I stumbled across Ibex's website and was reading about the company, on their website. I am looking at the Ibex Classic. I was wondering if any of you have any thoughts on this company?

All stock except fork - Manitou Axel Platinum

I know its an XC setup, but how would it be in light urban assault, what would break first, and could the frame buckle?

i weigh 140lbs and the biggest drop i''ve done on it is about 5 or 6ft, im scared to do any more on this bike, i dont want it collapsing

Explain why Floyd is completely innocent of these doping allegations. Best explanation wins. If applicable, you may go into these follow up questions: Who are the real bad guys here? Who should we really be after?

I've got Avid BB7's (with Avid Single Digit 7 levers) on a Giant Trance, and am toying with the idea of putting on my Avid Single Digit 7's just to experiment with something different. I also race XC (Beginner Men), and am thinking about saving some weight too. I am 5'8", and I weigh about 168lbs.

I had the SD 7's on the bike prior to the BB7's, and didn't really notice a difference other than my hands getting a little more tired on descents. Braking power seemed to be the same. I've also got new Kool Stop salman pads for the V's as well. People on MTBR.com said these pads make the brakes even better.

We left our bikes out in the rain and now they are rusty. The brake cable wont engage and the chains are all rusty. Is there a tried and true method that would save me some money or elbow grease?
