You can "forget" how to ride a bike but it will come back to you very quickly because it is a form of motor function, just like walking, reading, typing. Thats why you never fully forget. Though you may have a few balance problems at first as well as having trouble loosening up when riding.

When I got my road bike, 10 years after riding a bike, I totally had to re-learn how to ride! It didn't take very long but for a while there I was crashing into everything!

Haha, I forgot how to ride a bike. I was in a bad accident when I was 5, so I decided to never ride my bike again. Well, come the time when I was 12, my neighbor wanted a riding buddy, so she re-taught me how to ride.

I think because of the muscular memory and it is also a very natural motion for the body to perform, very similar to walking or crawling.
However I have never really learned how to ride a bike - started, crashed into a rosebush, got really hurt and then to add insult to injury literally my father screamed at me for not knowing how to avoid such a collision - haven't gotten on the two wheeled death trap since....

B/c riding a bike requires balance, once learned it, it's hard to forget how to balance.

same issue as lisaf...hadn't ridden since i was little, then many years later got a road bike...and had to re-learn everything. had a big issue with turning and how to brake. my husband still laughs at me for all those looks of terror i had on my face during that time!
and then i got to learn a new trick... (tips: 1--always clip out before trying to set your foot down. 2--lean the bike towards the side you have clipped out of! 3--remember it is not a monster that has grabbed your foot; you *can* clip out! 4--a bruised ego never hurt anybody)

Riding a bike is sensory ... your sense of balance ... once your muscles learn how to balance your body on two wheels, its indelibly in their memory, and cannot be forgotten.
Similar to learning how to tie your shoes.
